The Ranger is a hybrid mix between a Warrior and a Druid, sharing the skills of both. They're most at home in the great outdoors.

Description

The ranger is a hybrid class that blends the thematic elements of Warrior and Druid while bringing out unique archery based skills and best-in-class utility.

Rangers are a lightly armored offensive class which focuses more on delivering damage than tanking. In terms of combat skills they can use all types of weapons and get dual wield, double attack, triple attack, and kick. They have higher offensive skill caps than any other hybrid class. This, combined with innate attack spells means that rangers will have better and more consistent damage output for comparable equipment. Additionally, rangers are one of only two classes that can do critical blows with archery as a default. All rangers deal double damage with archery to standing targets that are not rooted. Additionally, ranged stance allows for use of archery in short range. Finally, rangers also have fast casting, cooldown controlled nukes that are great for fast-paced play.

In terms of defenses, rangers also get a number of defensive skills including dodge, parry, riposte, block, and disarm. However, they are lower in a number of defensive skill areas. They have a lower skill cap compared to Warriors, and slightly below the Paladin and Shadow Knight class as well. As light tanks with some of the best aggro inducing abilities in the game, they can but should not be left to tank for significant periods. They have no skill to reduce the monsters hate for them until the level 50 in the form of the spell Jolt. Indeed, until you have Jolt rangers will need to use snares, roots, or evasive to get out of sticky situations.

Rangers get the highest tracking skill in the game, which helps to find people or enemies within the area. This is particularly useful in the large outdoor zones, and can be used to track corpses of members of your group. Additionally, rangers have a high cap on forage which will all but guarantee you always have food and water to survive on.

In terms of magic Rangers get a range of nice utility spells. They receive both Spirit of Wolf and later take the form of a wolf benefiting from both run speed and a significant ATK bonus. They also get spells to reduce monster frenzy ranges, and this enables them to single pull out of a group. They have both healing spells and damage shields (the latter of which inflicts unresistable damage). This is coupled with a solid series of HP and AC increasing buffs, as well as some minor stat buffs. Damage wise they receive both direct damage and damage over time spells. They can also snare and root mobs. Despite their magical power they do not have the ability to bind or gate. You can view the full ranger spell list on the chart below.

If you are looking for a class pick with decent damage output, the best tracking in the game, and a little bit of magic to spice things up this class could be the one for you. You will be able to deal damage, spot heal, and act as a light tank in group content.

Loadout Synergies

Everquest Legends allows for lots of synergies when picking a class loadout. Consider the following choices based on how you want to play the game:

Ranger as Primary Class

Thematically, choosing ranger as your primary class means you are going to be picking a class that has range control. You can fight in close range, you can fight at long range, you can root and/or snare enemies, you can increase your own movement speed; this means that the ranger primaries will always have mobility. To make sure you always have runway, pick extra classes that give you distractions like pets. You will gain more distance control with a pet class like magician, necromancer, or beastlord.

Double down on archery by picking additional ranged combat classes like wizard, druid, magician, necromancer, or enchanter. Your goal is to weave spell and arrow into a pure stream of damage.

To improve melee damage, add berserker, monk, or rogue.

Ranger as Extra Class

Ranger brings unique ranged attack options for any other distance fighter; archery gives you a no-mana alternative to burning your mana bar. This means you have intrinsic synergy with most offensive casters (wizard, necromancer, mage, enchanter, and yes! even druid). Archery is a beautiful filler for any caster that would otherwise be meditating for mana in combat.

Most ranged classes also lack close range escapes and ranger's evasive stance gives you an extra survival tool. Even classes that can FD will appreciate being able to dodge almost all attacks for a few seconds when agro gets pulled.

Although melee is an option for rangers, most other loadout options will do better than ranger for improving melee damage. However, rangers have good itemization for melee loadouts and can bring unique items that they otherwise might not have access to like Dark Cloak of the Sky.

Tanks can benefit from adding ranger thanks to gaining access to evasive stance and high-threat generating spells like Snare, as well as AC and damage shield lines.

Creation Guide

Core Races

When creating a character you must first select your primary race. This race will be locked in at level 11, and can't be changed until you unlock other races. Below are the race options for this class, as well as their stat line.

When selecting a race, a big consideration is the factions it is associate with and opposed to. There may also be some racial benefits or penalties to consider as well. Clicking on the name of the race will take you to the detailed race pages where these are defined in detail.

Religious Considerations

Religion does have a few impacts upon the Ranger class. Rangers that also do fletching (which is *highly* recommended) will want to match their deity choices to the tradeskill source they intend to use; fletchers of Karana will get the ability to craft special bows and Steel Champion arrows from vendors in Surefall Glade, and rangers of Tunare will get the ability to craft special bows and Mithril Champion arrows from vendors in Greater Faydark. If your current unlocked deities does not include Karana or Tunare, consider unlocking one or both in order to use the best arrows that can be fletched.

OUT OF ERA: Historically, Tunare had quested items that appeared as well for rangers once Velious unlocked. This is not a factor you should consider for rangers in Everquest Legends.

Calms the savage spirit of almost any creature in an area around your target, making them less likely to attack. This spell only works outdoors. This spell can not be resisted by almost any NPC - however, it does not reduce the aggro/reaction radius as much as other lull spells so one must take into account how closely grouped your targets are. Despite that weaker reduction, this spell is much preferred over every other lull that comes with the risk of a critical resist and aggro. The power of an unresistable lull gives Druids/Rangers great utility to either pull themselves or aid monks/shadowknights in splitting pulls. A druid or ranger targeting a hidden/sneaking rogue can do some amazing work in areas like Plane of Hate's second floor where pulling tends to be uncontrolled at best; the rogue can position themselves in a specific spot where the harmony cast *on them* will only hit specific mobs in a room (like the Evangelist room) or area in order to allow pullers to more easily thin out larger packs of enemies. FAQ

Q: What stances does a ranger get?

A: Rangers get balanced stance, offensive stance, evasive stance, and ranged stance.

Q: Does a ranger ever get to critical hit? I am able to critcal with the bow occasionally, but never with my 1hs/2hs.

A: Without AA investment, rangers can only get critical hits with a bow. A higher DEX will increase the chance of getting a critical hit but does not increase the base damage dealt with a ranged attack. Base damage for archery attacks improves with attack power, and attack power scales with STR.

Q: What level do you suggest doing the ivy etched armor quest? And how difficult is it?

A: There are different Ivy Etched armor quests, each with different level NPC's you have to fight in order to obtain the items needed. The easiest and lowest level Ivy quest being the bracers, (which you can be complete easily in your 20's in a group), and hardest being the tunic/leggings, (which can be done solo in your 40's).


Q: Do Rangers get the ability to summon animals?

A: Unless you have an item that has the effect of summoning an animal, nope.


Q: What does increasing your level in tracking do?

A: It increases the range of your tracking.


Q: How do I make the best of archery?

A: Ranger archery in Everquest Legends is best utilized through the ranged stance. It removes the minimum range restriction on your bow and allows you to double and triple shot with bows while in the stance. This means you can function somewhat in melee while using the bow, but more importantly gives you great synergy with caster classes by giving you a damage method not reliant on mana.


Q: Do rangers ever learn to track their corpse or the corpse of other player characters?

A: You can track other character corpses only if they are in your group, and they have died while your in the same zone. Their corpse will stay on your tracking until they zone back in.


Q: What cities are the ranger guilds located? Are the guilds the only place a ranger can go to practice and buy spells?

A: Surefall Glade and Kelethin are the current cities (May 2026) a ranger can practice with their guilds. A single trainer named Morin Shadowbane is also available in Kithicor Woods. A large portion of ranger spells are also druid spells, which are available throughout Norrath at druid guilds and rings.


Q: How does a ranger make arrows and at what level are they effective?

A: You first need a fletching kit, a point, shaft, nock, and fletching skill. Put one of each component into the fletching kit, hit combine and hope that it works. You can merge your arrows up until they reach +10 like any other item. Keep in mind that crafted items are harder to get higher copies of, and thus you may need to plan on making 512 arrows just to reach +10 of your desired arrow.


Q: Would a Ranger get less experience if they are in Wolf Form?

A: Nope, experience stays the same.
