All summoned pets are Warriors, and most have an additional class as well. The Warrior class grants all pets combat abilities from the Warrior class such as Block, Cleave, Parry, Dual Wield, Kick, etc. Any summoned pets not on this list (such as Druid pets and Magician Monster Summons) are exclusively Warriors.

Pet Spell Upgrades
Legends Pet Info
Spell upgrades to pet spells improve the spell itself: lower mana cost, lower cast time, and each level provides 10% chance to not use a reagent.

Mages pets currently:
Along with adjusting the spell itself, it also provides a boost to the pet summoned by the spell. Each increase in the spell's rank, increases the summoned pet's level by one. This increase maxes out once the summoned pet has the same level as the caster.
Earth - Warrior
Water - Rogue
Air - Monk
Fire - Wizard

Pets use equipped weapons for damage calculations when equipped with a weapon whose damage value (pets ignore the delay value of a weapon except regarding their choice to accept a weapon or not, they will always favor the shorter delay even if this delay doesn't affect their battle speed) exceeds the default pet's value. Practically, it impacts only low level pets before they can dual wield if you give them a 2HB weapon (for example the mage summoned 2HB) which will have higher damage compared to the pet's innate damage. As soon pets get dual wield, the damage value -and anyhow, the damage/delay ratio- of a weapon becomes irrelevant as no available weapon in the game will exceed their innate damage.
Each upgraded pet level will provide the following benefits:
*+6% Hit Points
*+10% base damage
*+5 to skill points

Pet inventory slots are given as follows.
When a pet is summoned using a focus item, the pet summoned has higher base stats (more hit points, more damage per hit, etc). The bonuses from upgrading the spell levels are then applied on top of the focused pet's higher base stats.
Everyone starts with a base of 4, then you add the following slots for the following classes:
Mag, Bst: 3, Nec: 2, Enc, Dru, Shm: 1

So as an example, max would be the base 4 pet inventory slots + Mag 3, + Bst 3, + Nec 2 = 12 pet inventory slots.
At least some of these bonuses apply even if the summoned pet has reached max level.  If your +9 mage pet summons a level 50 pet when you are level 50, and you upgrade it to +10 - you will still have a level 50 pet, but the pet's health will still increase even though the summoned pet is the same level; pet damage is dependent on level, so that will not increase the same way. Other benefits (lower mana cost, cast time, and reagent usage) still apply.

...
How exactly the damage upgrade works alongside the new changes to pet weapon calculations needs to be tested (Oct 13th, 2026).

Changes are coming (source: https://discord.com/channels/1435786469968183456/1483590848997359646/1500945932961710242 - Ailia)
Pet Related AAs
* Companion's Discipline: Unlocks the /pet hold and /pet ghold commands.
* Companion's Fury (Magician Only): Grants access to the Frenzied Burnout I ability. This is a powerful pet buff that includes a large ATK bonus, overhaste, and causes the pet to flurry.
* Hobble of Spirits (Beastlord Only): Grants access to the Hobble of Spirit ability. This ability casts a permanent buff on your pet that lets it proc a 40% snare on its target.
* Pet Affinity: Allows Group Buffs, including Bard Songs, to affect your pet.
* Unbound Companion (Magician Only): Gives your pets an increased chance to land critical hits. Works on any pet you summon, not just Magician's elemental summons.
* Unbound Ferocity (Beastlord Only): Gives your pets up to 9% chance to flurry. Works on any pet you summon, not just Beastlord warders.

All pets have two classes plus can use any class you personally have. So decent range of stuff should fit on them.
Pets and Experience
The changes appear to be:
In order to receive full experience for a kill solo, you need to do at least 1 damage to the mob. If your pet does all of the damage, experience will be greatly reduced. [Unknown group impact, if a group member does 1 damage if full xp is given to summoner as well as group]
* BL pet will be WAR/BER.
* Mage fire = WAR/WIZ.
* Mage earth = WAR/RNG.
* Mage air = WAR/MONK.
* Mage water = WAR/ROG.
* Necro pet will be WAR/SK.
* Enchanter pet will be WAR/PAL.

Pet tracking
<BR>
In older versions of Everquest, the /pet attack <npc name> command could be used to check if NPCs up in the zone. If the NPC is up, the pet would emote 'Attacking <npc name> Master.'
<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
<BR>
<BR>

The original source of much of this information may not be strictly applicable to p1999, so those knowledgeable about each class should make corrections.
In Everquest Legends, pet tracking does <strong><em>not</strong></em> function. The pet attack command has a very short range.

General Pet Info
Pet Appearance
Level Variance is gone
There are a few available options for your pet's appearance.

[this has not been true anymore on EQ live and TLPs for many years, but we need to confirm it works the same on EQL]. All pets are summoned at their maximum and fixed level, there is no level variance anymore] All pets summoned on Project 1999 are subject to level variance, meaning that a level within the range specified is randomly selected when you summon a pet.  Reagents are cheap and you should be carrying multiple stacks of them at all times, so invariably you want to re-summon until you get a max pet, whether soloing or in a group.  The added damage and HPs of your max pet will be well worth while over the life of your group and especially if you're soloing.  This is true for all pet classes.
Pet Size
[same, we will need to delete this paragraph once we have confirmed the fix level]. The only way to be sure you have a max pet is to look at its damage output.  At some levels you may be able to con the pet, but later on, your pet will always be blue, so its max hit is the only real clue to its level.  If he's not hitting for max, recycle it.  Spell: Reclaim Energy is your friend.  There are numerous clicky items in game with this effect.  The mage focus items can be clicked from inventory and as such used by all pet classes.

Pet Weapons
In Options >> System >> Accessibility, you can use the "Pet Size" slider to change the size of all pets from your point of view. The Shrink and Tiny Companion spells may be used to reduce the size of your pet from everybody's perspective. You can even combine the spell plus the accessibility option to make your pet positively ant-sized.

[see above, practically it is meaningful only for low level pets without dual wield] "Pet damage increases if high enough damage weapons are equipped." Oct 23 2011 Patch.
Pet Illusions
In general this means that if a weapons damage is greater than the pets innate damage, the pets maximum hit will increase. This maximum hit follows the standard damage tables by level. For instance, capped at 21 for a DMG: 10 weapon at low levels. It is worth noting, however, that after level 10, pets don't necessarily follow the same damage cap progression. A level 16 necromancer pet with a 22 damage can hit for 44, for example.
Some items in the game can be used to place an illusion on your pet. These come in two varieties: items which require "conversion" to a pet illusion item (ex: Guise of the Deceiver) and items that are natively pet illusion items (ex: Petamorph Wand: Murderbee). You can find the full list of items under :Category:Pet Illusion Items.

While any pet class can benefit from giving their pet a weapon, Enchanters have the ability to retrieve pet weapons by letting their charmed pet break free of the charm and then be slain. Necromancers can do the same for undead mobs. Depending on your confidence level, you can also equip your charmed pet with items that reduce magic resist such as the Adamantite Band, thus allowing for longer charm times. You could also give your pet a haste item so it could benefit from worn haste, as well as the haste from any magical spell.
To use a native pet illusion item:
# Place the item in your Inventory >> Storage >> Activated items
# Switch to the Inventory >> Pet tab
# Set the illusion at Inventory >> Pet >> Pet Illusion
# Resummon your pet

This pet-gearing is something that can continue until you are dealing with rather expensive items, such as the Steel Hilted Flint Dagger. This dagger is the best dps pet weapon you'll find until PoP because of the high nuke proc (not because of the weapon's damage value). Another excellent choice are two Ykesha swords because of the aggro proc, these swords are the best in situations where you want your pet to tank and/or keep aggro. Once in Kunark era, an epic pet with two Ykeshas will be a true aggro magnet. There is a balance of risk and reward to equipping such items, and is quite thrilling. An item like the Staff of Undead Legions performs powerfully in a dungeon with lots of undead, such as Karnor's Castle. Woe to the enchanter or necromancer who loses thousands of platinum because of the loss of their pet. Even with forewarning, I have seen healers neglect to save the lives of these expensive puppets, as they have their own understanding of priorities in an emergency. Be mindful of how much you are willing to risk, and if you are in a pick-up group or a trusted static of friends.
To use a convertible item:
# Right-click on the item to open its details window
# Click the button next to 'Convert to <illusion item name>' (note: you will be prompted to remove any equipped exaltations)
# Follow the regular pet illusion item steps above

Beyond increases of DPS or aggro management, there is also a benefit to equipping your pet with more bizarre armaments. Giving your pet an instrument from a bard guild, such as a Mandolin, gives a clear visual to all melee members of the party which mob is the dedicated charm pet, and to ignore it.
Note: You can convert the illusion item back to the original item via the same mechanism.

[not sure it is true anymore on EQ live, we will need to test that in EQL] One trick I have found is that pets can actually triple wield if you give the items to your pet in a specific order. This can help maximize your pets DPS, especially as a young Necromancer or Magician by having a high damage weapon for your pet to wield. By giving your pet a Secondary slot only item, such as a Torch first, and giving your pet a two-handed weapon second, the pet will equip the 2 handed weapon in its primary slot while retaining its offhand item, and dual wield both.
Pet Equipment
Finding new equipment for your pet is something that can continue throughout the lifetime of your character, as you only need to acquire an item once, and you can use it indefinitely on your pet, until an upgrade is found. Pet inventory items are not lost on logout, pet death, or class changes. They remain in the pet inventory until you remove them. If you change your classes and lose pet inventory slots they will be displayed as red and will not be equipped by your pet, so must be moved to an active slot to be used.
<br>
Charmed pets also use items in the pet inventory slots until charm breaks.

This opens a horizon for pet weapon combinations and ability to show your style off to the group. You will get comments if your pet is the froglok with a Sarnak Ceremonial Sword and a Horn. [see above ; on EQ live and TLP servers, giving pets a 2H weapon is a clear no after level 20ish] Beyond displaying immense swag, some two handers make for nice pet weapons in this manner due to their procs, such as the inexpensive Stormwood Battle Staff, or if you plan on having your pet tanking while a cleric heals it, a Axe of the Slayers can reduce some of the damage taken. Keep an eye out for fun two handed weapons for your pets! Remember that your pet itself needs to be a high enough level to proc its weapon. Pets will ALWAYS ignore required levels to equip a weapon but will ALWAYS respect the required level for the proc. Pets will ALWAYS ignore lore, race, class tags. Only weapons tagged "No Pet" (and no trade items obviously) can't be equipped.
Equipment Restrictions
Pets can use any items that can be worn by their own classes, and any equipment you may wear. For example, if you're a DRU/MAG/SHM and you summon a Water elemental (WAR/ROG), the pet can use any items that can be used by: Druids, Magicians, Shamans, Warriors, or Rogues.

[ this paragraph contradicts what is said earlier, the best dps weapon for a pet before PoP and summoned pet weapons is the Howling Stones dagger] There are a number of weapons that have been identified as effective pet weapons due to an increase in DPS through proc effects, one of the most recognized being the Deadwood Stave. However, be aware that these proc effects may also break roots currently applied to their target; be aware of how your group composition is using its crowd control. Below is a list of some popular (and less well-known) pet weapons.
[Can pets use items with Deity restrictions?? Needs testing in EQ Legends]

One handed weapons
Pet Inventory Slots
Pet inventory slots are given as follows.
Everyone starts with a base of 4, then you add the following slots for the following classes:

* Wakizashi of the Frozen Skies - 80pt DD at level 20. Non-lore, low-level, semi-long quest
Magician and Beastlord: +3<br>
* Deadwood Stave
Necromancer: +2<br>
* Gnoll Hide Lariat the classic double edged sword - be careful when your pet breaks charm and keep your magic resistance high.
Enchanter, Druid, Shaman: +1<br>
* Goblin Skull Crusher another stunning weapon that is not Lore.
<br>
* Dagger of Dropping
Shadow Knight does not get an extra pet inventory slot.
* Master Wu's Trance Stick
* Serrated Bone Dirk
* Wintry Club
* Kunzar Ku'juch
* Staff of Undead Legions
* Steel Hilted Flint Dagger
* Coldain Crossbow

So as an example, max would be the base 4 pet inventory slots + Mag 3, + Bst 3, + Nec 2 = 12 pet inventory slots.

Two handed weapons
Pet Weapons
* Axe of the Slayers
Changes have been made to how pets function with weapons throughout Everquest Legends. As of October 13th, 2026, how pets use weapons has changed once again. Giving pets weapons will increase their damage output, but the effectiveness of the weapon should be based entirely on the weapon's <em>ratio</em>. Higher ratio weapons should always increase the pet's melee damage (though other factors, like stats, effects, procs, and accuracy should all be considered as well when equipping your pet).
* Sarnak Ceremonial Sword Very fashionable!
* A Mithril Two-Handed Sword which also confers a haste bonus.
* Stormwood Battle Staff
* Kromrif Laborer Pick
* Rod of Lamentation
* Firerune Brand
* Swarmcaller adds a Slow proc

Offhand items
More details on how exactly the new mechanic works will require testing, but regardless of how exactly it works, deciding which weapon to use for your pets should be much more straightforward. With low level pets, who typically have poor dual wielding - you'll generally get better damage output with a high ratio two hander.  For higher level pets, dual wielding high ratio one handers will usually provide much better damage per second against individual targets. However, when fighting large numbers of enemies simultaneously, it is possible that a two handed weapon will provide more damage due to much higher damage cleave strikes on multiple targets.

* Torch
Pet Damage Calculation
* Mandolin
Pet attacks use a weapon damage and delay, much like players, when performing melee attacks.
* Horn

There is another page dedicated to pet gear here.
Delay
Pet attack delays are <em>fixed</em>. So a level 50 water pet will always attack with a delay of 28 (2.8 seconds) no matter what kind of weapon it has. In the early months of EQ Legends, different pets had different delays and so far it appears that the pets' base delay and damage values are unchanged. But testing needs to be done to reconfirm, and fill out the damage and delay values in the class specific pet lists below.

Attack Delay
Damage
A pet's attack delay is not affected by the delay on a given weapon (it was in 1999, and Magician pets were not able to wield weapons at that time). However, weapon slot choice is determined by delay (i.e. lower delay item will replace one with a higher delay).
Pet Weapon damage is calculated by (Base Pet Damage * Mote Modifier) + (Equipped Weapon Ratio * Weapon Type Modifier).  Additionally, pets have bonus damage that is applied after the random roll to determine how much they hit the target for, just like players. Bonus damage cannot be modified, though it varies between different pets.

Pet attack speed starts at 3 seconds for the lowest level pets and gets faster for higher level pets, with the Magician epic pet having the fastest attack speed of any pet (1.65 seconds).
*Base Pet Damage: This is the damage of the pet's fist, if it is using no weapon at all. This is determined by the pet you summon.
*Mote Modifier: This is a damage increase from upgrading a pet spell with motes. The modifier is equal to 1 + (Spell Rank / 10).  So with a Rank 0 spell, the modifier is 1, and the pet does base damage.  At Rank X, the mote modifier increases to 2, doubling the pet's base damage.
*Equipped Weapon Ratio: Fairly self explanatory - this is the ratio of the weapon your pet has equipped. Upgrading the weapon with motes increases the ratio which increases the extra damage the pet deals from having a weapon.
*Weapon Type Modifier: This value needs more testing, but essentially the weapon ratio is multiplied by some value to calculate the final pet weapon damage. Two handed weapons have a larger modifier than one handed weapons (e.g. a 1.0 ratio one hander will do less damage per hit than a 1.0 two hander).

Dual Wielding
Dual Wielding
In classic, pets must be given two 1H weapons in order to dual wield. Pets gain innate dual wield at level 39 (based on forum reports, needs confirming). Dual wielding pets will eventually stop accepting 2H weapons or shields (reported to be in late 20s or 30s, needs confirming).
An update on July 7th, 2026 made changes to some, maybe all, pets' ability to dual wield. They now start dual wielding much earlier, and their dual wield skill improves more quickly than it used to.

Pet Armor
Pets can equip items in these slots: primary weapon, secondary weapon, ranged weapon, shoulder, legs, chest, head, foot, hands, arms, back, face, and neck. Additionally, they can equip a single wrist slot, and a single ear slot. Pets cannot equip no drop items. Pets do not follow race or class restrictions on items, which makes for some interesting equipment choices such as the Coldain Crossbow. Pets will gain stats from items, but note that armor slot choice is determined by AC (i.e. 16 AC +0 HP item will overwrite a 14 AC +50 HP item). <br><br> Note: A simple HP ring test determined that charmed pets currently benefit from two rings and are not limited to a single ring.

While any pet can benefit from equipping armor, classes that can charm a pet will benefit the most from this mechanic as they can receive the equipment bestowed to their charm target by breaking the charm and killing it. The two main bonuses charmers most often seek to bestow to their DPS machines are Haste to make usage of worn haste bonuses and a reduced magic resistance, thus allowing for longer charm times.

Common magic de-resistance items:

* Adamantite Band
* Rusty Spiked Shoulderpads
* a complete list of negative MR items can be found here.
* a list of pet gear can be found here

Because pets do not follow race or class restrictions, I have seen charmers carry a Tolapumj's Robe for their pets as it confers a hefty 36% haste bonus. Other items with a comparable haste bonus are quite pricey. For a full list of haste items you can give to your pet, view this table.

Pets and Experience
In order to receive full experience for a kill solo, you need to do more than 50% of the damage to the mob.  If your pet out-damages you, it will take 50% of the experience away from the kill.  This is a major change from the previous system, in which you only needed to do a single point of damage to the mob in order to get full experience. If you are grouped, you and your group will get full experience from the kill, regardless of how much damage the pet does. (Implemented: Oct 23 2011 Patch)

When doing less damage to a mob than your pet, in solo play, the 50% experience penalty can be avoided by removing your pet from the mob's aggro list before delivering the finishing blow to the mob. For example, this can be achieved in the following ways:
* The pet dies or is otherwise removed from the game.
* Enchanter: in case of a charmed pet, you can break charm on the pet before killing off the mob. No need to actually kill the formerly charmed pet, in this case, but it is a common practice among Enchanters to do so.
* Enchanter: casting Memory Blur on the mob. However, it is not easy to make sure the spell has succeeded (one technique: wait for next tick and check how much HP the mob regenerates; a large HP regeneration indicates the mob is out of combat and thus the spell succeeded).

Pet tracking
The /pet attack <something> command can be used to check if there are NPCs up in the zone. If the NPC is up, the pet will emote 'Attacking <something> Master.' If the NPC isn't up, no message is emoted. It's good practice to put /pet back off in the last line of your macro, so that if the NPC comes into range of your pet, it won't actually attack it. This method won't necessarily tell you where an NPC is, or how many of them, just if they're up in the zone.

Pet tracking was nerfed in the June 1st 2025 patch -- v61 client

Pros and Cons of the Elements
Note: Pets attempt to equip weapons in the order you place them in the inventory. If you have two one-handed weapons, and one of them is Primary only and the other is Primary/Secondary only you need to equip them in the correct order to get your pet to dual wield. If you equip the Primary/Secondary weapon first, the pet will put it in their primary slot. When you then give them the Primary only weapon, they will refuse to use it. You must give them the Primary only weapon first, and then the Secondary weapon.
As long as EQ has been around, the pros and cons of the mage pets has been a constant source of discussion. People have their individual play styles and the pets allow for a bit of customization depending on what you're looking for. (source)

EARTH
Dual Wield Measurements
*Has the most hit points of any of the elementals for its level
Dual Wield measurements on the class pet charts below represent how many additional off hand attacks are made relative to main hand attacks using identical delay. A dual wield of 100% would mean the pet makes an equal number of attacks with both hands - including double and triple attacks for each hand.
*Casts a root spell
*Has a relatively high disease resistance
*Considered the "tank" pet
*Good option for soloing due to its ability to root-tank while you nuke

WATER
This makes it easier to compare how much additional damage an off-hand weapon provides.  If you give a pet two 0.800 ratio weapons and its dual wield is 50%, their damage should be (roughly) equivalent to 0.800 + (0.800 * 50%) => 1.200 ratio two handed weapon.
*2nd highest amount of hit points among elementals of the same level
*Faster health regeneration
*Has a very high poison resistance
*Casts an ice damage spell
*Best DPS pet when not tanking

AIR
Weapon Procs
*Slightly fewer hit points than a water elemental of the same level
Pets will use the procs on most weapons, so long as they meet the minimum required level to do so. However, they are blocked from proccing AoE effect procs, such as the Earthquake proc on Earthshaker or Hierophant`s Crook.
*Casts a 3-5 second stun (ref)
*Has a relatively high cold resistance
*Goes invisible when idle
*Good alternative for grouping due to stuns and less chance of accidental aggro when invisible
*The only magician pet that can be cast in Plane of Sky

FIRE
Backstab Damage
*Has the fewest hit points of any elemental for its level
For Magician Water Pets, who are Rogues, their maximum backstab damage is 8 * pet's backstab damage. A pet's base backstab damage is equal to their base weapon damage. If you give a pet a weapon with backstab damage, it will use the weapon's backstab damage, but only if that weapon's backstab damage is greater than their own base backstab damage.  However, since the highest backstab weapon in the current game is Serpent's Tooth, with 13, and pets surpass an unarmed weapon damage of 13 at level 22 - there really isn't much reason to worry about the backstab damage of weapons you give your pets.
*Casts a fire damage spell
*Has a relatively high fire resistance
*Casts a self-only damage shield that is far stronger than what you can cast for a given level
*Excellent choice for soloing due to the damage shield
*Slightly lower melee DPS due to lack of kick/bash

MONSTER SUMMONING
NOTE: It's possible that the recent pet overhaul, combined with new weapon drops in Nektropos may have changed this information somewhat. More testing needs to be done to understand how weapons work with backstab under the new system.
*Summons a pet with the model of a random NPC from the zone you're currently in
*High hit points, roughly on par with an earth pet of the same level
*Unaffected by focus items
*Does not gain unique attacks or abilities based on appearance
** Monster Summoning I pets have an innate fire DD
*You can summon a dragon named Gabartik. Who cares if you have to DS it yourself?!

Generally monster summoning has a chance to give you a pet model from any non-playable race mob in the zone.  In Sol A, for example, you can summon a clockwork pet, but you can't summon a gnome. Some models are extremely rare and may take many attempts to successfully "capture" them.
Recommended Pet Weapons
There are also some easter egg type models that are quite unexpected.  Dagnor's Cauldron has a Faydedar model buried in the zone file.  Other expected models, such as Quillmane in South Karana or Terrorantula in South Ro, don't seem to be summonable or are insanely rare (over 1,200 attempts).
When starting out, just give your pets the best ratio weapons you can find that you don't need for yourself. You will usually want to use two handers, since their dual wield chance is low. By the time your pets are in their 20-30s, they are dual wielding quite frequently, so two one handers with good ratios becomes more viable.

The summoned monster pets are largely a novelty and help take the boredom away when farming in lower level zones.  Who doesn't love to watch a snow bunny slaughter the Eastern Wastes giant fort?  For serious adventuring, you will want to stick with your situational elemental pets.
Noteable Weapons
EPIC
<strong>One handed weapons</strong>
*Essentially a combination of all of the elementals upgraded and wrapped into one
*Has by far the highest hit points of any summoned pet in the game
*Hits very hard and quite fast
*Casts a 50 point damage shield
*Casts a 143 DD spell (cold-based)
*Casts an 84 DD stun
*Magician Epic Pets will no longer enrage at low health. Minor changes to runspeed and magic resistance.

Chain Casting
<ul><li> - Taunt proc, useful if you want your pet to tank for you</li>
<li> - 80pt DD at level 35. Requires a quest, Yuio's Illness, that needs Foraging and Tracking</li>
<li> - Stun</li>
<li> - Weaken</li>
<li> - Snare Dot</li>
</ul>

At some point in a mage's life, fluffy will not take the hits like he used to. The pet heal spells, although great for soloing at lower levels, do not keep pace with fluffy's hps or the damage output of mobs.  Therefore it becomes necessary for an alternate strategy: chain casting, which is the summoning of multiple pets in succession to kill a creature. At lower levels, the mana cost of pets and the cost of reagents makes this less feasible (and unnecessary due to your pet being strong enough to take the hits). However, at higher levels the mana cost of summoning pets drops (in addition to naturally dropping relative to your mana pool as you level), making it more cost effective to recast your pet rather than try and heal it.
<strong>Two handed weapons</strong>

Unfortunately, the way agro currently (as of 9/25) works, this strategy is not very effective with any pet except Earth.  This is because when a pet dies, the mob it was fighting immediately transfers its agro from the dead pet to the caster (instead of losing that agro, as it should).  As a result, the newly summoned pet will have little chance of peeling the mob off of the caster before they die.
<ul><li> - Rampage Proc</li>
<li> - Haste worn</li>
<li> - 2hb Banish Undead (Necro only)</li>
<li> - 2hs with extremely high damage and delay with an AoE proc (pets will now use AoE procs - they did not at launch, but as of September 2026 they now do)</li>
</ul>

This has been reported as a bug, but has yet to be acknowledged as one (as of 6/23/20).
Pet Armor
Chain Casting: How To
Pets can equip items by using the pet inventory system, accessed from a tab in your own inventory. However, they have the same limitations as a player character - they will only wear one chest, two earrings, two wrist items, etc.  Pets will gain stats from items, but if you give them too many of the same item, they will wear whichever item has higher AC, regardless of any other bonuses the item may have (i.e. 16 AC belt item will overwrite a 14 AC 22% haste belt). It is best to make sure to only give them exactly which items you want them to use.

/pet inventory check is a way to confirm if your pet is equipping a specific item. It will output in chat what your pet is currently equipping. If you wish for an item to be replaced or taken off, remove it from the pet inventory window and your pet will automatically update in real time.

To chain cast, start with any pet, and fight as normal.  When the pet starts getting low, begin casting your Earth pet, and start typing "/pet get lost" ... but don't hit ENTER.
Pet Details By Class
The following information is still being collected and updated for Everquest Legends.

(Typing the command is the only way to get rid of a pet while casting.  Casting Reclaim Energy or clicking in the pet window wouldn't remove the old pet in time, causing the new summon to fail.)
Beastlord Pets
Shortly before the new pet arrives, hit ENTER, killing your old pet.  If you time it right, your new pet should arrive right after the old one.
There was a patch on 8/18/2026 that was a pretty big change to Beastlord pets. Currently the only data in the chart below that is confirmed is for Spirit of Kashek.  Other pets still need retested.

Now the tricky part.  There's a decent chance your new pet will land a root immediately, which makes things easy.  Also, if your previous pet was an Earth pet, the mob may well be rooted already.

Character Level
But if not, run around for a few seconds (preferably with Journeyman's Boots).  You don't need much room (eg. the Geonid caves have plenty), because you're not really kiting the mob, you're just giving your pet a few seconds to land a root.  The Earth pet does this pretty reliably, so usually you won't wind up taking many hits (if any) ... although the Phantom Armor line of spells can help with any you do take.
Pet Spell

Pet Level
Once you land a root, your new pet can usually hold agro from then on, so things are easy ... until your new pet gets low on HP, and you need to repeat!

Focus Items
Dual Wield

The lesser focus items (, , , and ) are quested from the Temple of Solusek Ro, and provide the spell-level 4-49 pets with increased size and hit points. The rule of thumb is that a focus item will give a pet the hit points of the next-most durable pet (fire -> air -> water -> earth), or roughly a 25% increase.<br><br>

The greater focus items (, , , ) are obtained from high-end mobs and quests. In addition to the same change in appearance and hit points as their lesser counterparts, these staves provide a +1 level bonus to all summoned pets from spell levels 46-60. This allows for pets that can exceed the hit points, melee, and spell damage listed in the tables. The +1 level is added to the RNG of the level of pet you would have summoned. When you finish casting the summon pet spell, RNG will determine the level of pet you summoned in that pet spell's level range. If using the focus item, the pet's level will be RNG+1.

As an example, the Greater Vocaration: Water pet has a level range of 44-48. When you cast that spell, at the end of the cast RNG determines the pet level to be level 48.
If you are using a focus item for that pet type, it adds +1 to the RNG so the pet would be level 49. A focused max level Greater Vocaration: Water pet will hit for 60, backstab for 210, and nuke for 118.

Notes
*All levels in the table besides spell level refer to the pet's actual level, not the caster's.
*Ranges in the tables refer to minimum and maximum pet level for the column.  For example: 85-95 HP for the Elementalkin: Earth means that a level 4 Earth pet will have 85 HP while a level 6 Earth pet will have 95.
*All values and ranges are for unfocused pets.
*On P99 Green, I noticed the low level fire pets have far more hp regen than is listed here in the tables. I used a brazier of elemental summoning on my level one necromancer and it gave me a level 10 pet. I confirmed this by its damage output. It naturally regenerated 22% of its hp per tick. With a health pool of 130 HP, that's approximately 29 HP per tick versus the 6 listed here. I don't know if this is unique to fire pets, but if it is this makes them hugely more valuable when leveling prior to 39 when all pets obtain fast regen.

Level 39
Reagents
REGENERATION: At this level pets begin regenerating 30 HP/tick instead of 6.
Magician pets all require a Malachite to summon.

The Elements
As long as EQ has been around, the pros and cons of the mage pets has been a constant source of discussion. People have their individual play styles and the pets allow for a bit of customization depending on what you're looking for.

Air Elementals
Air Elementals suffer from being the middle of the road pets in most situations. They can be decent tanks, but not as good as Earth Elementals; and they can do decent damage, but not as good as Water Elementals. Like Water Elementals, they have an additional attack to increase their melee damage output. Unlike a Water Elemental's backstab, these monk-based strike attacks can be used from any position, keeping their damage output consistent regardless of what direction they attack from (though anyone attacking a monster from the front will have to deal with defensive skills like Riposte reducing their overall damage). Their greatest strength, however, is fighting casters. They use an instant cast, 3 second stun every 12 seconds. Combined with their normal attacks and monk strikes, this makes them quite adept at interrupting spell casting. The stun can also function like a weak root spell, helping to keep their target in place and focused on the elemental instead of yourself.

Pros
*Highest Armor Class (both Mitigation and Evasion) of all Elementals
*Extra damage from monk attacks that aren't dependent on positioning
*Casts a 3 second stun every 12 seconds, but mobs at level 56 and up are immune to stun (at least currently)
*Has a relatively high cold resistance (needs confirmation in EQ Legends)

Cons
*Second lowest hit points in the Classic Era
**In Traditional Everquest, Air Elementals start to have the second most hit points after level 50 - but there's no way to be sure if this will hold true in Legends
*Not as good at damage as Water Elementals, or as good at tanking as Earth Elementals

Earth Elementals
Earth Elementals are kings of tanking. They have the highest hit points, and cast an instant cast root spell every 16 seconds. This can keep enemies glued to your pet while you keep at range. However, they have the lowest damage output of all of the elementals in most cases - so if you already do most of the tanking, they usually aren't the best choice. However, their increased hit points may be beneficial when dealing with enemies such as Lord Nagafen who have strong AoE damage effects.

Pros
*Has the most hit points of any of the elementals for its level
*Casts a root spell
*Has a relatively high disease resistance (needs confirmation in EQ Legends)
*Casts Ranger spells, including buffing and healing itself, and low damage AoE nukes

Cons
*Lowest damage output of all pets
*Lowest Armor Class - both mitigation and evasion - of all pets. However, the difference is minor and becomes even less significant when fully equipped and buffed.
*Spends a lot of time casting low damage Ranger nukes, as well as Ranger root and snare spells - despite already having an instant cast root ability. On the upside the snare, root, and DoTs can help it maintain agro if you need it tanking.

Fire Elementals
Spell
The "glass cannons" of the Elementals. Fire Elementals have low hit points, but they cast Wizard nukes and spells. This includes a 5 second stun (though they don't use it consistently like an Air Elemental) and roots. They can also use Wizard AoE spells - both damage spells and snares. When upgraded to level 49, and Rank VIII Greater Conjuration: Fire Summon will even cast Ice Comet. These are probably the least used of the magician pets, but are far better in Everquest Legends than they were in traditional Everquest (at least during the Classic through Planes of Power eras). When clearing large numbers of blue and light blue mobs, the Fire Elemental's nukes can allow it to help you burn through low hit point enemies very quickly.

Manifestation of the Elements
This is the pet summoned by the Orb of Mastery, the reward for the Magician Epic Quest. It is not currently available in Everquest Legends, so this section mostly exists to retain information from traditional Everquest until Epic Quests have been added to Everquest Legends.
Lesser Conjuration: Water

920-1200 || 19-21 || 30-34
This elemental looks like a huge Air Elemental, but it is essentially a combination of all of the elementals upgraded and wrapped into one.
*Has by far the highest hit points of any summoned pet in the game
*Hits very hard and quite fast
*Casts a 50 point damage shield
*Casts a 143 DD spell (cold-based)
*Casts an 84 DD stun
*[once EQL is in Kunark, needs to be verified] Magician Epic Pets will no longer enrage at low health. Minor changes to runspeed [idem, needs to be verified, on EQ live, they run faster than regular pets but Velocity, the Kunark pet only runspeed buff, is still better] and magic resistance.

Water Elementals
Water elementals provide high sustained damage. If positioned behind their target they can backstab, and they have an instant cast direct damage spell that they cast every 6 seconds. They can also tank for you if need be, but it will lower their damage output. For most builds, water elementals are the most frequently used of all the elementals.

Pros
*2nd highest amount of hit points among elementals of the same level, at least up until level 50
**In Traditional Everquest, Air Elementals start to have the second most hit points after level 50 - but there's no way to be sure if this will hold true in Legends
*Can tank if need be, but not as well as an Earth Elemental
*Has a high poison resistance (needs confirmation in EQ Legends)
*Instant cast, cold resist, nuke every six seconds to boost damage output
*Backstabs when behind its target, making it the highest damage pet over long fights

Cons
*Needs to be positioned properly to use Backstab - will still use Backstab from the front, but it only counts as an extra normal attack dealing 25% as much damage as a backstab
*No additional utility - this pet is only good for dealing melee damage

Monster Summons
Monster Summons are pretty much just Fire Elementals, but without the Damage Shield or Wizard spells. They lack any benefit over using Elementals at all. The spell is a fun little party trick that allows mages to run around with a pet that looks like a monster from the zone they are in.

Generally monster summoning has a chance to give you a pet model from any non-playable race mob in the zone.  In Sol A, for example, you can summon a clockwork pet, but you can't summon a gnome.  Some models are extremely rare and may take many attempts to successfully "capture" them.

The summoned monster pets are largely a novelty and help take the boredom away when farming in lower level zones.  Who doesn't love to watch a snow bunny slaughter the Eastern Wastes giant fort? For serious adventuring, you will want to stick with your situational elemental pets.

Pet Focus Items
Are you looking for Focus Effects?

(This information was provided by the Devs during a livestream)

Pet focus items a bit strange. They do not improve the stats of the pets you summon. Instead the game has tons of predefined pets - including versions of every pet summoned with a focus item that works on their respective summoning spell. So rather than the focus item just giving pets a stat buff, using the focus causes your spell to summon a <em>different</em> pet with different stats. Because the benefits are not a flat buff, the exact benefits can vary slightly from pet to pet. Information below is intended to give a rough idea of what the foci do, but are not exact.

However, the exact interaction between the pet focuses and the Spell Upgrade System are still being tested and will be updated here later.

Lesser Elemental Foci
Level 44
The lesser focus items (, , , and ) are quested from the Temple of Solusek Ro, and provide the spell-level 4-49 pets with increased size and stats.

Level 49
* Bigger Pet Size
PET SKILLS: All pets except the Fire Pet gain the ability to double kick/bash.
* +1 level (limited like the bonus levels from spell upgrades)
** Does not give the same benefits as a level from the spell upgrades, it only allows them to cast new spells, if that extra level happens to unlock any.
* +15 STR
** Results in +10 Attack (Offense)
* +10 AGI
** Results in +5 Armor (Evasion)
* Extra Hit Points
** This is a bit annoying with how it works but seems consistent with how these focus effects worked in original Classic EQ. Essentially, the pet summoned when using the lesser focus has hit points equal to the next highest elemental's hit points. What that means is - a Fire Elemental will have hit points that match the hit points of an Air Elemental of the same level. A focused Air Elemental will have Water Elemental hit points. And Water Elementals will have hit points equivalent to Earth Elementals. Unfortunately, the Earth Elementals are already at the top and gain no additional hit points.

Necromancer Pets
The greater focus items (, , , ) are obtained from high-end mobs and quests. These staves provide improved stats and hit points for all pets that can be summoned with them. Currently this is limited to the Greater Conjuration line of pets, but is expected to include Kunark level pets as well.
Focus Item
The only pet focus item that Necromancers can obtain is the . Similar to the Magician pet focus items, this focus item makes the pet larger in size.  It also provides a +1 level bonus to all summoned pets from spell levels 46-60. This allows for pets that can exceed the hit points, melee, and spell damage listed in the tables. The +1 level is added to the RNG of the level of pet you would have summoned. When you finish casting a pet spell, RNG will determine the level of pet you summoned in that pet's level range. If using the focus item for that pet, the pet's level will be RNG+1.
Benefits
As an example, the Emissary of Thule pet has a level range of 43-47. When you cast that spell, at the end of the cast RNG determines the pet level to be level 47.
This area needs testing, but initial results show it being much better than the Lesser Elemental Foci. However, using the focus items may be pointless once your summoning spell is upgraded to +8. Further testing needs to be done.
If you are using the focus item, it adds +1 to the RNG so the pet would be level 48.

1 The pet can be focused with .

The only pet focus item that Necromancers can obtain is the . Similar to the Magician pet focus items, this focus item makes the pet larger in size. It is believed to only work on Invoke Death but this needs confirmed for EQ Legends.
<br />

4 47 Focused pet had 3200hp, while 48 focused had 3300hp. Non focused also scales based on level to 2700 max.
When used with Invoke Death, the focus provides +10 STR/STA/AGI, which grants some bonus ATK and Evasion. It also boosts the base pet hit points from 5230 to 5470. The Spell Upgrade System then applies any spell upgrades (such as increased Hit Points) to the focused pet.

Effect: This command is a toggle. Using "/pet ghold" will toggle between on/off, but "/pet ghold on" and "/pet ghold off" also work. When this state is toggled on, the pet will not attack anyone unless you explicitly tell them to.

Special Note: Not available on P99.  This command is only available to level 59 or higher pet classes who have obtained the Alternate Ability (aka an "AA skill") in the  Pet Discipline.  AAs were introduced with the Shadows of Luclin expansion and is not on the P99 development timeline.
Detail: This command prevents any enemies from being added onto your pet's hate list, except if you explicitly tell them to attack. This gives complete control over who your pet will and will not attack. However, in chaotic fights against many enemies it can result in your pet standing around watching unless you tell your pet to attack each and every enemy.

Effect: causes the pet to be Held, i.e. it ignores its Hate List and goes into Free mode, resuming its regular movement (either follow, guard, or sit).
Telling your pet "/pet back off" clears the list of any targets you have given it and it goes back to not fighting anything.

Detail: this command does not clear the pets hate list, the pet will remain "held" until you give it an attack command at which time it will attempt to attack the target at the top of its hate list. It is recommended you add the following line after /pet hold in a macro: /pet back off to ensure your pets hate list is clear. A pets hate list is frozen while it is "held", which means it does not add anyone or MOB to its hate list even if attacked.

General Pet Info

All summoned pets are Warriors, and most have an additional class as well. The Warrior class grants all pets combat abilities from the Warrior class such as Block, Cleave, Parry, Dual Wield, Kick, etc. Any summoned pets not on this list (such as Druid pets and Magician Monster Summons) are exclusively Warriors.

Multiclass Pets
Pet Second Class Additional Abilities
Beastlord's Warders Beastlord Beastlord Spells, including Slows
Enchanter's Animations Paladin Lay on Hands, Paladin Spells
Magician's Air Elementals Monk Monk special attacks
Magician's Earth Elementals Ranger Ranger Spells, including AoEs
Magician's Fire Elementals Wizard Wizard Spells, including AoEs, Stuns, Roots
Magician's Water Elementals Rogue Backstab
Necromancer's Undead Shadow Knight Harm Touch, Shadow Knight Spells
Shaman's Spirit Guardians Beastlord Beastlord Spells, including Slows

Pet Spell Upgrades

Spell upgrades to pet spells improve the spell itself: lower mana cost, lower cast time, and each level provides 10% chance to not use a reagent.

Along with adjusting the spell itself, it also provides a boost to the pet summoned by the spell. Each increase in the spell's rank, increases the summoned pet's level by one. This increase maxes out once the summoned pet has the same level as the caster.

Each upgraded pet level will provide the following benefits:

  • +6% Hit Points
  • +10% base damage
  • +5 to skill points

When a pet is summoned using a focus item, the pet summoned has higher base stats (more hit points, more damage per hit, etc). The bonuses from upgrading the spell levels are then applied on top of the focused pet's higher base stats.

How exactly the damage upgrade works alongside the new changes to pet weapon calculations needs to be tested (Oct 13th, 2026).

  • Companion's Discipline: Unlocks the /pet hold and /pet ghold commands.
  • Companion's Fury (Magician Only): Grants access to the Frenzied Burnout I ability. This is a powerful pet buff that includes a large ATK bonus, overhaste, and causes the pet to flurry.
  • Hobble of Spirits (Beastlord Only): Grants access to the Hobble of Spirit ability. This ability casts a permanent buff on your pet that lets it proc a 40% snare on its target.
  • Pet Affinity: Allows Group Buffs, including Bard Songs, to affect your pet.
  • Unbound Companion (Magician Only): Gives your pets an increased chance to land critical hits. Works on any pet you summon, not just Magician's elemental summons.
  • Unbound Ferocity (Beastlord Only): Gives your pets up to 9% chance to flurry. Works on any pet you summon, not just Beastlord warders.

Pets and Experience

In order to receive full experience for a kill solo, you need to do at least 1 damage to the mob. If your pet does all of the damage, experience will be greatly reduced. [Unknown group impact, if a group member does 1 damage if full xp is given to summoner as well as group]

Pet tracking

In older versions of Everquest, the /pet attack <npc name> command could be used to check if NPCs up in the zone. If the NPC is up, the pet would emote 'Attacking <npc name> Master.'

In Everquest Legends, pet tracking does not function. The pet attack command has a very short range.

Pet Appearance

There are a few available options for your pet's appearance.

Pet Size

Don't step on him!

Pet Illusions

Some items in the game can be used to place an illusion on your pet. These come in two varieties: items which require "conversion" to a pet illusion item (ex: Guise of the Deceiver) and items that are natively pet illusion items (ex: Petamorph Wand: Murderbee). You can find the full list of items under Category:Pet Illusion Items.

To use a native pet illusion item:

  1. Place the item in your Inventory >> Storage >> Activated items
  2. Switch to the Inventory >> Pet tab
  3. Set the illusion at Inventory >> Pet >> Pet Illusion
  4. Resummon your pet

To use a convertible item:

  1. Right-click on the item to open its details window
  2. Click the button next to 'Convert to <illusion item name>' (note: you will be prompted to remove any equipped exaltations)
  3. Follow the regular pet illusion item steps above

Note: You can convert the illusion item back to the original item via the same mechanism.

Charmed pets also use items in the pet inventory slots until charm breaks.

[Can pets use items with Deity restrictions?? Needs testing in EQ Legends]

Pet Inventory Slots

Pet inventory slots are given as follows. Everyone starts with a base of 4, then you add the following slots for the following classes:

Magician and Beastlord: +3
Necromancer: +2
Enchanter, Druid, Shaman: +1

Shadow Knight does not get an extra pet inventory slot.

So as an example, max would be the base 4 pet inventory slots + Mag 3, + Bst 3, + Nec 2 = 12 pet inventory slots.

Pet Weapons

Changes have been made to how pets function with weapons throughout Everquest Legends. As of October 13th, 2026, how pets use weapons has changed once again. Giving pets weapons will increase their damage output, but the effectiveness of the weapon should be based entirely on the weapon's ratio. Higher ratio weapons should always increase the pet's melee damage (though other factors, like stats, effects, procs, and accuracy should all be considered as well when equipping your pet).

Pet Damage Calculation

Pet attacks use a weapon damage and delay, much like players, when performing melee attacks.

Delay

Pet attack delays are fixed.

Damage

Pet Weapon damage is calculated by (Base Pet Damage * Mote Modifier) + (Equipped Weapon Ratio * Weapon Type Modifier). Additionally, pets have bonus damage that is applied after the random roll to determine how much they hit the target for, just like players. Bonus damage cannot be modified, though it varies between different pets.

  • Base Pet Damage: This is the damage of the pet's fist, if it is using no weapon at all. This is determined by the pet you summon.
  • Mote Modifier: This is a damage increase from upgrading a pet spell with motes. The modifier is equal to 1 + (Spell Rank / 10). So with a Rank 0 spell, the modifier is 1, and the pet does base damage. At Rank X, the mote modifier increases to 2, doubling the pet's base damage.
  • Equipped Weapon Ratio: Fairly self explanatory - this is the ratio of the weapon your pet has equipped. Upgrading the weapon with motes increases the ratio which increases the extra damage the pet deals from having a weapon.
  • Weapon Type Modifier: This value needs more testing, but essentially the weapon ratio is multiplied by some value to calculate the final pet weapon damage. Two handed weapons have a larger modifier than one handed weapons (e.g. a 1.0 ratio one hander will do less damage per hit than a 1.0 two hander).

Dual Wielding

An update on July 7th, 2026 made changes to some, maybe all, pets' ability to dual wield. They now start dual wielding much earlier, and their dual wield skill improves more quickly than it used to.

As players determine which level pets actually start dual wielding, they can be updated here. This is the pet level when they begin to use both weapons, not character level.

  • Beastlord Warders: 5
  • Enchanter Pet: ?
  • Magician Air Pet: 8
  • Magician Earth Pet: 9
  • Magician Fire Pet: ?
  • Magician Water Pet:6
  • Necromancer Pet:8
  • Shadow Knight Pet: ?
  • Shaman Pet: ?

Note: Pets attempt to equip weapons in the order you place them in the inventory. If you have two one-handed weapons, and one of them is Primary only and the other is Primary/Secondary only you need to equip them in the correct order to get your pet to dual wield. If you equip the Primary/Secondary weapon first, the pet will put it in their primary slot. When you then give them the Primary only weapon, they will refuse to use it. You must give them the Primary only weapon first, and then the Secondary weapon.

Dual Wield Measurements

Dual Wield measurements on the class pet charts below represent how many additional off hand attacks are made relative to main hand attacks using identical delay. A dual wield of 100% would mean the pet makes an equal number of attacks with both hands - including double and triple attacks for each hand.

Weapon Procs

Pets will use the procs on most weapons, so long as they meet the minimum required level to do so. However, they are blocked from proccing AoE effect procs, such as the Earthquake proc on Earthshaker or Hierophant`s Crook.

Backstab Damage

NOTE: It's possible that the recent pet overhaul, combined with new weapon drops in Nektropos may have changed this information somewhat. More testing needs to be done to understand how weapons work with backstab under the new system.

When starting out, just give your pets the best ratio weapons you can find that you don't need for yourself. You will usually want to use two handers, since their dual wield chance is low. By the time your pets are in their 20-30s, they are dual wielding quite frequently, so two one handers with good ratios becomes more viable.

Pet Armor

Pet Details By Class

The following information is still being collected and updated for Everquest Legends.

There was a patch on 8/18/2026 that was a pretty big change to Beastlord pets. Currently the only data in the chart below that is confirmed is for Spirit of Kashek. Other pets still need retested.

Pros
  • Highest Armor Class (both Mitigation and Evasion) of all Elementals
  • Extra damage from monk attacks that aren't dependent on positioning
  • Casts a 3 second stun every 12 seconds, but mobs at level 56 and up are immune to stun (at least currently)
  • Has a relatively high cold resistance (needs confirmation in EQ Legends)
Cons
  • Second lowest hit points in the Classic Era
    • In Traditional Everquest, Air Elementals start to have the second most hit points after level 50 - but there's no way to be sure if this will hold true in Legends
  • Not as good at damage as Water Elementals, or as good at tanking as Earth Elementals

Pros
  • Has the most hit points of any of the elementals for its level
  • Casts a root spell
  • Has a relatively high disease resistance (needs confirmation in EQ Legends)
  • Casts Ranger spells, including buffing and healing itself, and low damage AoE nukes
Cons
  • Lowest damage output of all pets
  • Lowest Armor Class - both mitigation and evasion - of all pets. However, the difference is minor and becomes even less significant when fully equipped and buffed.
  • Spends a lot of time casting low damage Ranger nukes, as well as Ranger root and snare spells - despite already having an instant cast root ability. On the upside the snare, root, and DoTs can help it maintain agro if you need it tanking.

Fire Elementals

Pros
  • High burst damage
  • Casts an instant cast, zero mana fire DD every 6 seconds
  • Casts a self-only damage shield that is far stronger than what you can cast for a given level
  • Has a relatively high fire resistance (needs confirmed in EQ Legends)
Cons
  • Lower damage in long fights once it runs out of mana
  • Its spells cannot be upgraded, which means it cannot benefit from the resist reduction that Wizards can get - so its nukes can get resisted easily against powerful targets
  • Its spell list cannot be customized for a given fight
    • It will use Cold Resist spells against ice creatures, Fire Resist spells against fire creatures, and cast stuns and roots on enemies that are immune to such effects
  • Dies easily due to significantly lower hit points

Manifestation of the Elements

This is the pet summoned by the Orb of Mastery, the reward for the Magician Epic Quest. It is not currently available in Everquest Legends, so this section mostly exists to retain information from traditional Everquest until Epic Quests have been added to Everquest Legends.

This elemental looks like a huge Air Elemental, but it is essentially a combination of all of the elementals upgraded and wrapped into one.

  • Has by far the highest hit points of any summoned pet in the game
  • Hits very hard and quite fast
  • Casts a 50 point damage shield
  • Casts a 143 DD spell (cold-based)
  • Casts an 84 DD stun
  • [once EQL is in Kunark, needs to be verified] Magician Epic Pets will no longer enrage at low health.

Pros
  • 2nd highest amount of hit points among elementals of the same level, at least up until level 50
    • In Traditional Everquest, Air Elementals start to have the second most hit points after level 50 - but there's no way to be sure if this will hold true in Legends
  • Can tank if need be, but not as well as an Earth Elemental
  • Has a high poison resistance (needs confirmation in EQ Legends)
  • Instant cast, cold resist, nuke every six seconds to boost damage output
  • Backstabs when behind its target, making it the highest damage pet over long fights
Cons
  • Needs to be positioned properly to use Backstab - will still use Backstab from the front, but it only counts as an extra normal attack dealing 25% as much damage as a backstab
  • No additional utility - this pet is only good for dealing melee damage

Monster Summons

Monster Summons are pretty much just Fire Elementals, but without the Damage Shield or Wizard spells. They lack any benefit over using Elementals at all. The spell is a fun little party trick that allows mages to run around with a pet that looks like a monster from the zone they are in.

Generally monster summoning has a chance to give you a pet model from any non-playable race mob in the zone. In Sol A, for example, you can summon a clockwork pet, but you can't summon a gnome. Some models are extremely rare and may take many attempts to successfully "capture" them.

So rather than the focus item just giving pets a stat buff, using the focus causes your spell to summon a different pet with different stats. Because the benefits are not a flat buff, the exact benefits can vary slightly from pet to pet. Information below is intended to give a rough idea of what the foci do, but are not exact.

However, the exact interaction between the pet focuses and the Spell Upgrade System are still being tested and will be updated here later.

) are quested from the Temple of Solusek Ro, and provide the spell-level 4-49 pets with increased size and stats.

Benefits
  • Bigger Pet Size
  • +1 level (limited like the bonus levels from spell upgrades)
    • Does not give the same benefits as a level from the spell upgrades, it only allows them to cast new spells, if that extra level happens to unlock any.
  • +15 STR
    • Results in +10 Attack (Offense)
  • +10 AGI
    • Results in +5 Armor (Evasion)
  • Extra Hit Points
    • This is a bit annoying with how it works but seems consistent with how these focus effects worked in original Classic EQ.

Benefits

This area needs testing, but initial results show it being much better than the Lesser Elemental Foci. However, using the focus items may be pointless once your summoning spell is upgraded to +8. Further testing needs to be done.

EQ Legends Pet details are being updated for Necromancer pets in the spell descriptions, not all pets have been tested yet.

. Similar to the Magician pet focus items, this focus item makes the pet larger in size. It is believed to only work on Invoke Death but this needs confirmed for EQ Legends.

Druid Pets

In current Everquest Legends, Druids can only Charm animals as pets, the details below are not relevant to the current state of the game.

Spell Level Pet Level Pet Class ~HP Max Hit Kick/Bash Dmg
Nature Walkers Behest 55 23-28 Warrior 200-300 20-30 30

This pet is not very useful as a standard pet. Some Druids use it together with clicky Reclaim Energy items as a way to store mana. (It is a good guard pet in low level zones while afk) The above stats were collected from a live server and may be inaccurate if there were ever any updates pertaining to this pet.

Pet Commands

Command: /pet follow me, or /pet guard me

UI Button: Follow

Effect: puts the pet in Follow mode. This is the initial mode of a newly summoned pet. This command will overwrite /pet sit and /pet guard here and force the pet to follow its master.

Command: /pet guard here

UI Button: Guard

Effect: puts the pet in Guard mode.

Detail: pet will become "parked" at its current locaton, contrary to the command wording it will not automatically attack any MOB, unless said MOB attacks its master.

Special Note: A pet under /pet guard here will face the nearest NPC, including invisible mobs, traps, horses, and Eye of Zomms.

Command: /pet sit down

UI Button: Sit

Effect: puts the pet in Sit mode.

Detail: works exactly like the /pet guard here command with a few minor exceptions, low level pets will regen slightly faster. Once pets get their innate regen boost in the low 30's this additional regen becomes inconsequential.

The command /pet sit down will overwrite the command /guard, meaning that after it kills a mob it will follow its master rather than returning to the point where /pet sit was issued.

Special Note: /pet sit will toggle the pet's sit state, whereas /pet sit down will force the pet to sit.

Command: /pet attack

UI Button: Attack

Effect: places the owners current target onto the pet's Hate List, and ends /pet hold.

Detail: pet will temporarily forget all prior commands and attempt to attack the target at the top of his hate list. /pet attack does not place the target at the top of the pets hate list, it just makes the pet attack the mob at the top of his hate list. The pet will not forget targets it already hates. It will not "forget" movement states, such as follow or guard, it will just temporarily ignore them as he attempts to attack his target. After the mob dies, the pet will return to his previous guard point, follow, or sit down, as previously commanded. The pet may be sidetracked however if another MOB begins to attack him before he has engagued the target OR if another MOB is doing signifigantly more damage to the pet thus generating enough aggro to make the pet switch targets.

Special Note: you may also use the alternative version of this command /pet kill PvP Note: unless Player versus Player is enabled, you cannot add a player or a player charmed NPC to a pet's Hate List.

Command: /pet kill name

Effect: takes whatever would be selected by the command /target name and puts it at the top of the pet's Hate List.

Detail: for example assume King Tormax was within range for you to /target King Tormax the command /pet kill King Tormax will order the pet to attack King Tormax regardless of what you currently have targeted. Originally a zone wide command, it was reduced to only work within the same range of the /target command.

Command: /pet back off

UI Button: Back

Effect: empties the pet's Hate List, causing it to stop attacking.

Detail: while this will clear the pets hate list, if a mob atacks the pet again after this command is given it will begin attacking the mob again. This is a particular problem in areas with mobs casting large AE's. Temple of Veeshan is the most common example.

Command: /pet taunt off

UI Button: Taunt

Effect: disables pet taunting, that is the pet will not taunt during fights.

Detail: this command very helpful on raids or other such group encounters where summoning MOBs are involved. However, in solo situations you should generally leave taunt enabled.

Special Note: if you omit the "off" portion of the command it will toggle the pets taunt mode (i.e. if it is on it will switch it off, and vice-versa)

Command: /pet taunt on

UI Button: Taunt

Effect: enables pet taunting.

Detail: generally recommended for solo situations only.

Special Note: if you omit the "on" portion of the command it will toggle the pets taunt mode (i.e. if it is on it will switch it off, and vice-versa)

Command: /pet leader

Effect: the pet will /say My leader is Doofus Da'Magi.

Detail: This command can be used by any player to target a pet and identify its owner.

Command: /pet get lost

UI Button: Leave

Effect: Instantly kills your pet.

Detail: This will instantly kill your pet, and is one of the essential commands for a technique known as chain-petting.

Special Note: This command is zone-wide and will kill your pet anywhere in the zone, regardless of distance from its master.

Command: /pet health

UI Button: The Pet window itself

Effect: Displays your pet's current health percentage and buff list in the chat window.

Detail: This command instantly displays the current status of your pet, showing its HP percentage and current buffs/debuffs it currently has.

Special Note: This command displays the pet's health faster than the UI can update, and is very useful when timing is critical.

Command: /pet target

Effect: Targets your pet.

Detail: This command clears your current target and replaces it with your pet. This is very useful for macros. However, it's often faster to simply hit the F1 key twice to target your pet.

Special Note: This command will target special pets that borrow the name of their master (i.e. Xalmat's pet) instead of your summoned pet (Flurfy's warder, Jonartik, etc). Use with caution when using such pets.

Command: /pet as you were

Effect: Clears your pet's command list

Detail: This tells your pet to revert to a free state. If the pet is currently under /pet follow, or /pet guard me, it will revert to a /pet sit state. If it is chasing an NPC, and /pet as you were, followed by /pet back off is issued, the pet will continue off in its direction of travel. This command does not break /pet hold.

Command: /pet hold

Unlock: Companion's Discipline AA

Effect: Causes the pet to hold its attacks. It ignores its Hate List and goes into Free mode, resuming its regular movement (either follow, guard, or sit).

Detail: This command does not clear the pet's hate list, the pet will remain "held" until you give it an attack command at which time it will attempt to attack the target at the top of its hate list. After this, it will continue to attack other enemies on its hate list or new enemies added to its hate list. A pet's hate list is frozen while it is "held", which means it does not add anyone to its hate list even if attacked, but anyone on its list before being told to "hold" remains on the list.

After telling your pet to hold, you can use /pet back off to ensure your pet's hate list is clear.

Command: /pet ghold

Unlock: Companion's Discipline AA

Effect: This command is a toggle. Using "/pet ghold" will toggle between on/off, but "/pet ghold on" and "/pet ghold off" also work. When this state is toggled on, the pet will not attack anyone unless you explicitly tell them to.

Telling your pet "/pet back off" clears the list of any targets you have given it and it goes back to not fighting anything.
