== 3 Factions per Race... usually ==
Most races require three factions to unlock. Humans have 3 factions per each of the two cities of Freeport and Qeynos. Either will unlock Human, though evil characters may wish to do both to freely travel in either city. Unlocking either of the Human or Wood Elf unlocks Half-Elf, so a separate unlock is not required. Iksar only has one faction to unlock the race. All unlock factions will be included below, but the organization groups them by quest so not all 3 unlock factions will not be necessarily grouped together unless there is a preferred quest that affects all "three" and can be done with same quest.

=== | == Checking Faction ==
[[Faction]] can be checked under EQL>Character>Faction standings. This will update when switching between loadouts. Under reaction is your adjusted faction affecting your ability to do quests and determines if you are "Kill on Sight", KoS to the faction you are thinking of interacting with. It is based on race (or apparent race via illusions), and sometimes class and deity, and even a few items. This base gets modified by the standing. Standing is the current adjustment ranging from -2000 to positive 2000 that you can earn and starts at 0. You need to get to positive 2000, AKA Max Ally not just ally, to be flagged for race unlocks. Once flagged for an unlock faction, always flagged no matter how low it falls later. More detail can be found by link in paragraph header.
== Assumptions == | |||
Agnostic deity is generally assumed on estimates, unless noted. Estimates also assume no factions affecting kills have been done. For example, if you spent time killing Gnolls in Black Burrow, you have already gained Qeynos Guards and Merchants of Qeynos faction and some other non-unlock factions. If you turned the fangs over if you collected them in either in Halas or Qeynos, this will affect the appropriate factions as well. | Agnostic deity is generally assumed on estimates, unless noted. Barbarian race unlock is a nice one to start with. It involves a few to several trips to West Karana and back to Halas. It can be done at level 1 if you are not KoS in Halas. Evil races can use Illusion Human (level 2 enchanter) remove the KoS status. | Barbarian race unlock is a nice one to start with. It involves a few to several trips to West Karana and back to Halas. Kobolds in Steamfont are close and a bit more common than rogue clockwork. You can also choose to purchase the Illusion Gnome spell in the zone from enchanter vendor. ===== [[Bard Reports]] | Guards of Qeynos is affected many quests, and killing Gnolls in Black Burrow, so good characters might want to consider one of the many other options for raising this faction. As a Troll or Ogre, the bards in some cities can be an issue, although that can be resolved for high level characters by spending some time in Mistmoore. But as a younger character this is a simple fix for bard faction that also contributes to a race unlock faciton.

You may want to wait awhile to do this one unless you have good smithing or lots of PP to spend. The first part can be done with metal bits as part of low level blacksmithing skill up, so not too bad and done by converting rusty weapons to tarnished ones. Turning those into ore and converting the bricks to pieces and lastly small piece of ore to metal bits. You can also simply purchase small pieces of ore fairly cheaply. But you can start saving the bits up from early on in your adventures. When you get to the high quality bricks part this can be expensive. However, they can be made from fine steel weapons. So once these start to drop save them to craft the bricks rather than selling and buying back the more expensive bricks. You will need to be level 20 to cast Vision of Selebite (Iksar illusion) if using during turn-in. So this is not too difficult, but is hard to complete at lower levels. | You may want to wait awhile to do this one unless you have good smithing or lots of PP to spend. Overview
This guide is aimed primarily unlocking races and other factions and the as a strategy guide for new characters. It is based on Beta experience and will be updated after go live. There are other guides here and else where on specific factions. This is meant more to give options and a suggestions to an order to complete the various race unlocks.
This is more about a strategy guide on the quests and when they can be done. Focus is on starting characters and may not have built up resources. Many quests can affect different unlocks, or may be useful to have to prevent harassment by factions not part of unlocks. For example, evil characters can often be attacked by League of Antonican Bards after getting faction that let's them otherwise travel freely in a good city. So some quests have been chosen to help with more than unlock factions.
This guide is one example of a plan to gain factions early on when the kills and quests can still gain xp. It is also focused on those also wanting to do all achievements/race unlocks. User:Alanna/Alanna's Race Unlock Guide is a good resource, if looking to only unlocking specific races and lists options that can be used as source for alternative pathways. Much of the material is the same is presented here, but recommendations are changed based on strategy focusing on new character, evil considerations for additional factions and all unlocks.
Quest details will generally be supplied by link when available rather then repeated below so updates on the linked quest, such as changes to faction hits should be updated there.
3 Factions per Race... usually
Preparation
It is possible and perhaps valuable to start unlocking race early. This will allow you to level your character while unlocking races without spending a lot of time on grey mobs. In order to get started there are a couple things that can make your journey easier. Personally I started as troll as there did not seem to be a way to increase one faction required in Beta. It is also suffers from the evil race problems for many factions.
Checklist
- Do the tutorial to get Boots of the Long Road, if creating a new character.
- Purchase the enchanter spell Illusion: Human (level 2), if not Human. Neriak Third Gate is option for Ogre/Trolls. Other races will have vendors in start city or vendors in a close city.
- Purchase the enchanter spell Illusion: Dark Elf (level 10), if not Dark Elf.
- Level up to level 4 if you wish to use invisibility.
- Buy as many Backpacks as you can.
- Optional purchase both Gnome and Erudite illusions as well as Visions of Selebite (Isksar) though may be bought later when needed.
- Make use of Agnostic deity in most cases to improve factions. There is a an Agnostic deity Quest to unlock if you are over 10 and deity is locked.
- Consider purchasing Permanent Illusion AA (under General 5 pts) when you can. This will allow you to use gate by casting or via Rituals and otherwise zone without without illusion dropping.
Checking Faction
Faction can be checked under EQL>Character>Faction standings.
Assumptions
Agnostic deity is generally assumed on estimates, unless noted. Estimates also assume no factions affecting kills have been done. For example, if you spent time killing Gnolls in Black Burrow, you have already gained Qeynos Guards and Merchants of Qeynos faction and some other non-unlock factions. If you turned the fangs over if you collected them in either in Halas or Qeynos, this will affect the appropriate factions as well.
Alternate Quests
The affected factions are linked and on those pages are alternate quests to change factions.
Stage 1 Low Level with No or Minor Requirements
Barbarian race unlock is a nice one to start with. It involves a few to several trips to West Karana and back to Halas. It can be done at level 1 if you are not KoS in Halas. Evil races can use Illusion Human (level 2 enchanter) remove the KoS status.
Quest
Requirements
- Level: 1 or 2 (if evil and need illusion Human for first set of turn-ins)
- Faction: Merchants of Halas and Wolves of North
- PP outlay: none
Bonus Factions
Benefits and Drawbacks
- XP for low level characters
- 120 or 60 PP based on option chosen
Steps
If you are not KoS in Halas or have permanent illusion you can go there first and bind at soul binder, if you have yet to unlock that in Rituals. Or you can head to SW Barbarian fishing village and talk to Einhorst McMannus, without speaking to Teria O`Danos first. He will ask you to deliver the lion meat shipment to Halas. Fill up your bags and you can even over stack your cursor as there is no doors even if you are running back for your first delivery. After the first delivery you will likely be not KoS if agnostic and can bind at soul binder. At level 4 you can then use gate ritual by having int caster in loadout, so the return trips should be easy. Go to the dock area of Halas and give the shipments to Teria O`Danos.
This was giving 3 gp and a Lion Delight each in additon to all 3 required factions and to Shamen of Justice. At level 4 also gave ~1.7% xp each. The gold will let you buy enough backpacks to fill all up on next trip. So buy more backpacks if you needed. The Lion Delights are edible, so if you are turning these over to Iceberg make sure they are not lower in your bags than other food. From here you have a couple options.
Option 1 - All Lion meat Shipments
Do the quest again, gating back when possible, until you max out Rogues of the White Rose (400 turn-ins). This will give you a nice 120 PP to fund future factions quests. You can keep the lion delight as food or destroy it. This is probably best option for low level characters, or those without tracking skill and don't feel like visually hunting down Iceberg.
Option 2
Do the quest 200 times (for 60 PP) and turn 200 Lion Delight over to Iceberg. This will give you a Sweaty Shirt as next part of Langseax quest line. So you might want to fill up your bags to not have to delete all of the quest items manually in each spot, unless you are planning on dong the next step. This can be time consuming as can tracking down Iceberg without tracking skill.
Option 3
Do option 2 but keep some of the shirts to hand to Frostbite near the Barbarian fishing village as part of Langseax Quest. (This did not seem to be working on beta, or spawn time might be more than a couple minutes) The spawns for Langseax Quest are estimated at level 20 to low twenties. It's easy enough to get shirts, so unless you can and are doing quests immediately or soon after, option 1 or 2 is probably better.
Alternate Quest
Gnoll Bounty Good if spending time in Black Burrow, though Fangs can be used to raise Human (Qeynos) factions as well under Moonstones Quest.
Quest
This one can be done at anytime. It only costs time and provides no benefit particular other than race unlock/faction, so where you put it in the line up is based on your priorities. Was not able to get quest item as a human with indifferent faction (15), was able to with Illusion Gnome Amiable (115). Likely available at 100 faction standing, to be updated when verified. The quest giver suggests killing rogue clockworks to improve faction, but many mobs work for Gem Choppers. Kobolds in Steamfont are close and a bit more common than rogue clockwork. You can also choose to purchase the Illusion Gnome spell in the zone from enchanter vendor. This will help with navigating the tunnels for taller characters. The only somewhat annoying part with this quest currently is the black boxes don't stack nor sell so need deleted manually.
Requirements
- Level: 1 (8 if using gnome illusion)
- Faction: Amiable to Gem Choppers
- PP outlay: none
Bonus Factions
- none
Humans have two different city that can be unlocked. You only need one to unlock Human, but can do both for ease of navigations to both cities. If you have not unlocked Half-Elf, unlocking either city will give it as well. Half-Elf also unlocks with Wood Elf, so will unlock the first of these.
This is a nice way to max out The Freeport Militia for Freeport, Coalition of Tradesfolk and Corrupt Guards without losing the good factions required for the unlocks.
Requirements
- Level: 1 or 2 (if evil and need illusion Human)
- Faction: uncertain of specific faction
- PP Outlay: none
Bonus Factions
- Coalition of Tradesfolk Underground
- Carson McCabe
Benefits and Drawbacks
- You will some times receive Agility gloves on reply note turn-in for Janam quest. Janam's quest gives more Coalition faction +20 vs +10, but the other two unlock factions are +5 for each, which means with will max coalition faction out sooner, unless both Militia and Corrupt Qeynos guards are already near max.
Guards of Qeynos is affected many quests, and killing Gnolls in Black Burrow, so good characters might want to consider one of the many other options for raising this faction. As a Troll or Ogre, the bards in some cities can be an issue, although that can be resolved for high level characters by spending some time in Mistmoore. But as a younger character this is a simple fix for bard faction that also contributes to a race unlock faciton.
Quest
Requirements
- Level: 1 or 2 (if evil and need illusion Human)
- Faction: uncertain of specific faction
- PP outlay: none
Bonus Factions
- League of Antonican Bards
Benefits and Drawbacks
- Having bard faction can really help evil characters who can be harassed by the bards in the good cities.
Alternate Quest
Moonstones Quest Good if spending time in Black Burrow, though Fangs can be used to raise Barbarian factions as well under Gnoll Bounty
Quest
Doing Kobold Molars (Good) will get you 1430 faction with the High Council of Erudin and seems to be only practical quest for Deep Water Knights of Erudite unlock. For every 5 kobold molars you will get +7 Deep Water Knights faction but only +5 High Council, you need to deliver 2 messages (134 in total) for High Council of Erudin to keep pace faction wise with Deep Water faction. Aderius Rhenar is located in Jail area of Warrens in a cell surrounded by Kerrans. It is up to your preference if you wish to do all molars first, do these first keeping track of 134 turn-ins or interweave. This is a good alternative to the small lanterns quest, you simply fill up on cloth notes and turn in in one step process and no quest items to destroy between steps.
Requirements
- Level: 8 to use Illusion Erudite
- Faction: uncertain specific faction but Erudite Illusion works
- PP Outlay: none
Bonus Factions
Halfling (2 easy factions)
Blinza Toepopal in the Fool's Gold will give stew if requested even if not halfling illusioned. She won't give dialog, but will give you a quest item (Carrot Stew) if you day "I will deliver the stew". It is in same zone so a shorter journey than the Hungry Deputy quest and the recipient is always up unlike the Hungry Deputy quest. It is good for evil characters as it raises Storm Reapers faction as well unlike Bandages for Honeybugger. The bandages quest is a quick and fairly cheap alternative (400 bandages) for good and neutral races and can be done in single turn-in in Misty Thicket.
Requirements
- Level: 1 (2 to use Illusion Human)
- Faction: uncertain but quest item will be given without giving full conversation.
- PP outlay: none
Bonus Factions
Benefits and Drawbacks
- Lose Dreadguard Outer faction which is part of the unlock for Dark Elf. For every 5 deliveries you will need to give one extra red wine to repair if you have not yet maxed Dreadguard Outer.
Erudite (most or all 3 factions)
Kobold Extermination
- Deepwater Knights
- Heretics
- High Council of Erudin (full faction or partial)
Here the kills for drops begins. Erudite is a great way to start as you can see below. All of the Erudite factions are helped by going to the Warrens and slaying Kobolds. The zone starts at around level 5 and plenty of the common mobs are up to midteens deeper in. It also allows for increase in in High Guard of Erudin faction with each kill. The guard is the city guard, but not part of race unlock (High Council is), but allows for evil character to rapidly not be KoS in most part of Erudin. You can bank even though when glares threatening to the bankers. Caution the Deep Water Knights faction does not increase with kills, but from turning in Molars, so be sure to use illusion Human druing turn-in if Deep Water Faction is low.
Options
This quest and easily can be paused as you level past the mid-teens, though there are a bit higher leveled named as well. You can switch load-outs to level multiple classes while doing these faction grinds as well if you are thinking xp is dragging. There is no need to finish this in one go either. You can always come back later and kill greys or switch loadout to get the xp or if in need of some quick PP.
Quest
Expect to have to kill 1500 Kobolds to get enough molars for Deep Water Faction. 400 will max out Heretics though you will lose 1 point each molar turn-in, but since each kill is 5 maxing Heretic is no problem and will occur way before Deep Water Knights is maxed out. The molar quest with get you 5 points for each High Council of Erudin faction, you will need as well which is 1430 of the needed 2000 points. The High Council can be done with the quest listed above, by delivering notes from listed above if you have Illusion Erudite, which can be purchased in Erudin and is level 8, so will be available after scribed to you in enchanter loadout at that level. Unless you really have become addicted to Kobold slaughter.
Requirements
- Level: 4 recommended
- Faction: none, but will need to get to Warrens
- PP Outlay: none
Bonus Factions
Benefits and Drawbacks
- Heretic faction will be lost on turn-in but is gained at +5 per kill and since molar drop rate is about 1 for 5 kills, it is quick off set between turn-ins.
- Around 6 gp per turn in.
- This is an excellent way to make PP early on. The quests can give ring mail pieces that can be worn or sold for a PP or more.
- The Kobolds also drop weapons that can sell for a couple PP or merged and used.
- There are also Soft Wicker and Dusty Burlap armor drops.
- Before finishing the race unlock, expect several hundred PP and some basic gear.
Drops to Consider Keeping (Other than Kobold Molars)
- Kobold Hides for Tabure Ahendle in Qeynos Arena area Kobold Killing
- Red Wine for Dark Elf Faction quest Bottle of Red Wine
- White Wine for High Elf and Wood Elf merchant factions (unlock) quest
- Honey Mead for Trumpy Irontoe in South Qeynos as alternative for Corrupt Qeynos Guards faction.
- Brandy for Rohand's Brandy as alternative quest.
- (optional) Short Beer - as brewing/baking trade skill ingredient (68/119 baking, various brewing up to 168 Underfoot Brown/Ginesh)
- (optional) Kobold Meat - as baking trade skill ingredient (trivial 41 recipe)
Quest
Catman Alliance (see previous section for High Council of Erudin)
This quest is faster than continuing to raise High Council faction with molars. But that and other options exist.
Break Out the Brew
Now with a quite a few PP in hand several races can be unlocked. This section is for factions that require drinks of various kinds. These can be be some combination crafted, mob dropped, purchased, or in the case of Trumpy Tonics quested. Many drop from the Kobolds in the Warrens, so time to put those saved during the grind for molars to good use. The PP earned via the Erudite quests can fund your brewing trade skill leveling if going that route. It's not too expensive to raise brewing with store bought ingredients making brewing your own Trumpy Tonics perhaps the better option than multiple turn-in
Red Wine is not recommended to be crafted as it requires berries needed for Halfling unlocks.
Quest
Requirements
- Level: 10 (seem to need Dark Elf illusion for turn-in)
- Faction: Dark Bargainers Amiable
- PP outlay: 400 bottles of Red Wine (bought, crafted or mob drop)
Bonus Factions
- none
Red and White Wine is not recommended to be crafted as it requires berries/fruit needed for Hafling/Ogre unlocks.
Quest
Requirements
- Level: 1 (2 if illusion human is needed)
- Faction: unknown
- PP outlay: 400 bottles of Red Wine or White Wine (either work)
Bonus Factions
- none
Trumpy Tonics (2 different quests)
There are two different quests involving Trumpy Tonics. Trumpy Tonics can be quested, a slow process, or brewed. The brewing is 135 trivial, but if you are going to level that up, it is perhaps a good time to start, if you have not done so yet.
Quests
Requirements
- Level: 1 (2 if illusion human is needed)
- Faction: unknown
- PP outlay: 400 Trumpy Tonics as crafted or brewed
Bonus Factions
Human (Freeport-Knights of Truth & Coalition of Tradesfolk, Qeynos Merchants of Qeynos)
These factions may have already been adjusted by previous quests and kills now or later so how many tonics you want to use if any can depends on your plans. You could use upto 286 Trumpy Tonics for Groflah based on no previous adjustments. Doing the Note for Janam quest gives +20 per turn in to Coalition of Tradesfolk, so maxes out well before The Freeport Militia does. Doing Kobold skins and Bard Reports raises Knights of Truth. The Kobold Skin quest gives 5 per 4 Kobold skins, although reduces Militia faction by 3. This is not usually relevant if max faction was already flagged, unless you are close to KoS. Each brandy given to Roland gives +25 to merchants of Qeynos. Doing the honey mead for Trumpy lowers Merchants of Qeynos by 1 per turn in of 4 honey meads. If you have or are planning to spend time in Commonlands kiling Orcs and Black Burrow for Gnolls, you may want to wait on determine if those activities will max out the other two factions. +5 per kill to Knights of Truth for Orcs and +5 per Gnoll for Merchants of Qeynos. Once you are done with the above you can see if any more faction is needed. Each tonic gives 10 points to Knights of Truth and Coalition of Tradesfolk (perhaps already maxed by Note to Janam) and 7 points to Merchants of Qeynos. So calculate how many are need to max standing to 2000 points for each and pick the largest number if you choose to go this route.
Alternatively as meantioned, Knights of Truth can be increased by killing orcs in Commanlands and Merchants of Qeynos can be increased by Gnolls in Black Burrow. So killing is a good option for the later two factions as it gives other factions. Orcs give Guardians of the Vale (Halfling unlock) plus Ashen Order (FP monk, not unlock) and Commons Residents, good to buy sell in Commonlands. Gnolls give Qeynos Guards (Human Qeynos unlock) as well as Silent Fists (Qeynos Monk) and Surefall Glade Druid and People of the Pine factions, although not Surefall Ranger faction.
Tonics for Groflah
Taking the Elf off the Shelf
You should have more than enough PP to purchase the turn-ins for the quests to finish High Elf and Wood Elf. Wood Elf is completed in East Freeport, so if you don't feel like running over to Felwithe from here, change your loadout to Wood Elf after unlock and Origin after timer resets.
Quest
- High Elf - Clerics of Tunare
- Wood Elf - Soldiers of Tunare
Requirements
- Level: 1 (2 if illusion human is needed)
- Faction: unknown
- PP outlay: 400 muffins
Bonus Faction
Quest
Requirements
- Level: 1 (2 if illusion human is needed)
- Faction: unknown
- PP outlay: 1600 bat Wings
Bonus Faction
Froggy Went a' Courtin'
There are a couple methods for unlocking froglok. The second is for higher level characters spending time in Lower Guk or other zones with Phosphorous Powder. (This section needs verified and expanded)
Method 1
Give 1600 Bone Chips to Zok Zribb
Bonus Factions
- Citizens of Gukta
- High Council of Gukta
- Lorekeepers of Gukta
Method 2
Give 400 Phosphorous Powder to Dar Collector Reokar.
Hard Times
Here the remaining factions aren't quite so easy/profitable. The longest so far is perhaps Erudite but allowed leveling, gearing up and was profitable. Some of these were not available during Beta.
The Holy Halfling
This is the third and and most involved Halfling unlock faction. It requires many berries so lots of foraging and likely picking up the Misty Thicket ground spawns. It also requires 400 Black wolf skins, which takes several mobs to drop and they are low level so grey out fast.
Quest
This quest requires 400 black wolf skins and likely 4000 black wolves (it seems 10% drop rate) killed to get the drops. It also requires 400 berries that take hours on hours to havest/forage. Also 800 ruined wolf pelts, which will likely be obtained during obtaining black wolves skins.
Requirements
- Level: 1 (2 if illusion human is needed)
- Faction: unknown
- PP outlay: none
Bonus Faction
- needs updated
Ogre Cuisine
This seems to require player crafted muffins which requires a foraged fruit each. This meets many hours of foraging.
Lizard Meet
Method
Give 160 metal bits multiples of 4) to Crusader Iktra in North Ro until amiable. If he refuses your trade after accepting some, you will need to go on to next step.
Give small pieces of high quality ore to Crusader Iktra in North Ro until faction is maxed. Each piece is 10 points, so 190 will be needed.
While moderate level characters small pieces of ore to make metal bits is fairly affordable. Small pieces of high quality can be made by splitting high quality bricks (~5.6 PP each) in two created two, less failures means about 3 PP a piece. The or bricks can be crafted from fine steel weapons in mid-range zones across Norath.
Troll Toll
Grobb Merchants did not seem to have a quest in Beta. This will be updated depending on how the missing faction is handled post go live.
The Hidden Kerran
Kerran unlock is anticipated on release, but was not in Beta
