One secondary consideration is that the "Evil" races have a somewhat harder time traveling around, as some of the major connection points are in cities generally hostile to Evil races, especially with regard to the boats between continents. Multi-Classing
In EverQuest Legends a character can be a combination of up to three classes, also known as multi-classing. This allows your character to simultaneously gain the benefits (i.e., attributes, skills, spells, etc.) of all three! You can find the original Multiclassing and Loadouts announcement on the EverQuest Legends YouTube Insight Series.
Character Creation (Primary & Secondary Classes)
At character creation, you will first choose your Race. The main functional consideration with this choice is that you will only be able to choose from the classes available to that race as your primary class. One secondary consideration is that the "Evil" races have a somewhat harder time traveling around, as some of the major connection points are in cities generally hostile to Evil races, especially with regard to the boats between continents. However, given that all of your classes will level up to level 10 simultaneously (more below), everyone will quickly have the option to use Illusions to temporarily change their race. Thus being an Evil race is not as much of a concern as it was in classic EQ. Beyond those two factors, the choice is mostly cosmetic. There are some differences in base stats between the races, but with multi-classing and AAs (both discussed below), these differences are also not as much of a concern as previously. In most cases, you'll be fine to pick a race based on the class you want to play as your primary class and your favorite appearance.
You then choose your Primary class from those available to your race, and then any class, regardless of race, as your Secondary. Until Level 11, you may change your Primary class at any time to any of the other classes available to the Race you picked. Note: There are no gameplay differences between Primary and non-Primary (i.e., Secondary and Tertiary) classes.
Deity & Home City
In addition to choosing your race and Primary and Secondary classes, you will also choose your deity and starting city. Your deity choice may have some impact on how some NPCs interact with you and there are some rare sets of gear specifically for followers of a certain deity. However, additional deities can also be unlocked later in gameplay. If you class allows, choosing Agnostic is always a safe bet.
Level 10 (Tertiary Class)
At level 10, you can choose any class, regardless of race, as your Tertiary.
Level 11
Important: At level 11, you must commit to a race, deity, and Primary class. This cannot be changed until you've unlocked other races, deities, and Primary classes by completing the respective achievements. It is recommended your first Primary class combination be one you expect to use often with other multi-class combinations until you decide to unlock other Primary classes.
Unlocking Primary Classes
Unlocking Primary classes both enables you to change your existing Primary class, as well as makes them available to choose from for any race (e.g., unlocking Shaman as a Primary class would allow you to choose it as a Dark Elf, Gnome, etc). You will be able to unlock one additional primary class for free after reaching level 50 for the first time. Thereafter, each class can be unlocked by completing an Achievement related to that class, which is generally gathering the Plane of Sky Quest items for that class, and thus requires a character capable of doing end-game content. You can view the Achievements in the Achievements window under "Unbound Potential" and within the Class subsection. You may also view the requirements for unlocking other Races and Deities in this same window.

Loadouts
Loadouts are previously saved character templates, or presets, of race and multi-class combinations. Loadouts are accessed from the Loadouts tab on the Inventory screen. Loadouts may only be changed within certain zones: cities and zones adjacent to cities with a "newbie area". As noted above, after level 11 your race and primary class cannot be changed until you unlock other options. Secondary and Tertiary classes may be changed at will. Loadouts are intended to allow you to save commonly used combinations for rapid swapping when in a zone where your loadout may be changed.
Leveling Classes
Up to level 10, all 16 classes will level at the same time, regardless of which combination you are actively playing. Beginning at level 10, only the classes you are actively playing will gain experience, and at they do so at the same rate. If at any time you switch to a different loadout, or edit your current loadout, your character level will be adjusted to the lowest of the three classes that you chose. Also in this case, only the lowest class will gain experience. If two classes are at equal level, but lower than the third, then both lower classes will gain experience. If all three are the same level, then all three will gain experience.
Alternate Advancements (AAs)
Alternate Advancements (AAs) are an additional form of character progression that is (mostly) independent of your Loadout. They are accessed via the Alternate Advancement section of your character screen. In general, they are various additional abilities or passive buffs which will be applied to your character when unlocked. Certain AAs are automatically unlocked for certain classes. Most will be unlocked by earning AA points to spend on the various AAs you decide would be beneficial to you. AA points are earned similarly to character levels in that you gain AA experience from killing mobs and questing. You will earn this experience alongside and simultaneously to your leveling experience. Once purchased and unlocked, AAs will apply to your character across all loadouts for general AAs. If an AA has a class requirement, it will only be active if an appropriate class is in your current Loadout. Disabled AAs are not lost; they will remain dormant and reactivate when an appropriate class is loaded.
AAs are also organized into three broad categories: General, Archetype, and Class. General AAs are available to everyone in all loadouts. Archetype AAs apply to certain broad categories of classes, such as meelee dps, tanks, casters, etc. Naturally, Class AAs are specific to each class. As noted above, AAs that require a class you do not currently have loaded will be disabled until an appropriate class is active.
Of note, AA experience appears to be earned faster as lower levels than higher levels. As such if you want to maximize the number of AA points you will eventually earn, then you should attempt to always be leveling one class at a time, i.e. have one class in your loadout be lower than both of the others, as much as possible. If such min-maxing doesn't appeal to you, then don't worry. You'll still get plenty of AA points even if you do not strictly follow this recommendation.
