Description
The beautiful white wonder of the Karanas. This magnificent creature is a source of mystery and intrigue for the many who have heard the tales. Still, like all stories that have been woven around fantastic beasts these also have been found wanting; shrouded in mistruths and lies, exaggerations and empty boasts that inform very little if at all.
But now, through the efforts of the most dedicated hunters and explorers the actual knowledge has been extracted, reviewed, tested and agreed upon. The mystery remains, but the curtain has parted and the door has opened. Step through and read The Tale of the Pegasus.
Lore
Quillmane is the unique pegasus that is a favored creation of Xegony, goddess of the air. Some claim that the enchanted beast has created broods of lesser pegasii by mating with normal horses, but these rumors are unconfirmed. Quillmane has been spotted by travelers in virtually every temperate region of Norrath, but most commonly grazes on the Plains of Karana. He allows those that are worthy to take his fallen wing feathers and discover the benefits of the aerial magic contained therein. It is said these feathers allow the winged horse to float on air and that Quillmane only uses his wings to maneuver and propel himself, not for lift. Naturally, some of Norrath’s less worthy citizens are happy to hunt the prized pegasus, seeking to take his feathers as a magical trophy.

Quillmane Spawn Cycle
Quillmane uses a placeholder (PH) cycle in Southern Karana. When Quillmane or the active PH is killed, the next mob in the cycle spawns approximately 66 seconds later.
The methods below are recommended for a newly created solo or group respawning instance. In a public instance, other players may have already killed mobs on the Quillmane cycle or other spawn cycles, making it difficult to determine the current state of the cycle. Starting with a fresh instance provides a cleaner environment for identifying and following the PH.
Quillmane and the PH can spawn at many locations throughout the southern half of the zone. After spawning, they may roam outside this area, including north through the Splitpaw area.
Confirmed Placeholders
The following placeholders were observed directly on the Quillmane cycle during September 5, 2026 testing:
- an elephant
- a lion
- a lioness
- a mist wolf
- a shadow wolf
- centaur archer
- centaur charger
- centaur foal
- aviak darter
- aviak egret
- aviak harrier
- aviak rook
- an escaped Splitpaw gnoll
Centaur foal was newly confirmed as a Quillmane PH during the September 2026 test and was not present in the previously documented PH list.
Centaur charger, aviak rook, and aviak egret are newly confirmed as Quillmane PH on September 18, 2026.
Unconfirmed Placeholders
- Note: The following mobs were documented as Quillmane placeholders in older Classic EverQuest and Project 1999 information, but were not observed on the Quillmane cycle during September 5, 2026 or September 18, 2026 testing:
- centaur courser
- centaur sheltie
- aviak avocet
- a Treant
- a cyclops
These mobs are retained for reference, but the older information may not accurately reflect the current Quillmane cycle on EverQuest Legends.
Treants were also tested during September 2026, but their observed respawn timing appeared faster than the approximately 66-second Quillmane cycle and they could not be confirmed as PHs.
Ranger Method
Once the active PH is known, Quillmane is straightforward to cycle with Ranger Track.
- Set Track to Normal so the most recently spawned mobs appear at the top.
- Kill the active PH and start a 1 minute 6 second timer.
- Summon a pet or familiar to create a persistent bookmark in the Track window. Any mobs that spawn afterward will appear above it.
- Around the time the timer expires, identify and kill the replacement PH appearing above the bookmark, then restart the timer.
- Repeat until Quillmane spawns. After killing Quillmane, restart the timer and continue the cycle if additional spawns are desired.
There may be a handful of unrelated spawns above the pet while following the cycle. A mob appearing above the bookmark does not automatically make it the Quillmane PH. The approximately 66-second timing and known PH types are what identify the correct replacement.
Recommended Ranger Tracking Location
During September 2026 testing, a level 36 Ranger with 185 Tracking was positioned at approximately:
-5170, 505
From this location, every Quillmane and PH spawn encountered during the test appeared within Track range. This allowed the Ranger to remain near one location and watch for each replacement instead of searching the entire zone.
Finding the Initial PH
Finding the initial PH is the difficult part. Once the correct cycle has been identified, following it with Ranger Track is relatively simple.
A newly created solo or group respawning instance is recommended when beginning the hunt. This avoids entering a public instance where the current state of the Quillmane cycle and other spawn cycles may already have been affected by other players.
If Quillmane is already spawned when the instance is created, kill Quillmane first and start a 1 minute 6 second timer, then summon a pet or familiar as a Track bookmark. The replacement PH should appear approximately 66 seconds after Quillmane was killed. Because the pet was summoned after the kill, the replacement will appear above it in the Track window.
If Quillmane is not up, gather as many known PH types as possible and kite them together until you have a decent-sized group. Kill them all as quickly as possible, starting a 1 minute 6 second timer immediately after the first kill. Once the group is dead, summon a pet or familiar to create a spawn-order bookmark and watch the mobs appearing above it on Track. Other spawn cycles can have timers of approximately 38 seconds, so mobs appearing before the 66-second mark can be ignored. Once the 66-second timer expires, any known PH types that begin spawning above the bookmark are likely part of the Quillmane cycle.
- Note: If the entire group was killed within 38 seconds of the first kill, you can instead wait until 38 seconds after the final kill before summoning the pet or familiar. This allows mobs from the faster spawn cycles to appear before the bookmark, making the later 66-second Quillmane-cycle spawns easier to identify above it.
Because Southern Karana contains other fast spawn cycles, mob type alone is not enough to identify the active Quillmane PH. Continue narrowing the candidates until one can be followed consistently on the approximately 66-second cycle.
Spawn Locations
- Note: The spawn location information below was sourced from the Project 1999 Quillmane wiki and has not been independently verified on EverQuest Legends. These locations are retained for reference but may not accurately reflect Quillmane's current spawn locations on EverQuest Legends.
Quillmane and the PH have been reported spawning at more than 30 locations. The spawn locations appear to be concentrated in the southern half of Southern Karana, although Quillmane and the PH may roam north after spawning.
The most extreme locations reported during earlier testing were:

September 5, 2026 Testing
A level 36 Ranger with 185 Tracking created a fresh D2 solo respawning instance of Southern Karana and found Quillmane already spawned. This provided a known starting point from which the cycle could be followed directly.
Starting with that Quillmane, the cycle was followed through 10 total Quillmane kills over approximately 3 hours 30 minutes of hunting. The next mob in the cycle was consistently observed spawning at approximately 66 seconds.
The 10 Quillmane kills produced 6 Feathered Leggings and 4 Pegasus Feather Cloaks.
The following PH types were observed on the Quillmane cycle during this test:
- an elephant
- a lion
- a lioness
- a mist wolf
- a shadow wolf
- centaur archer
- centaur foal
- aviak darter
- aviak harrier
- an escaped Splitpaw gnoll
Centaur foal was not present in the previously documented PH list and was confirmed during this test.
Observed Cycle
The complete observed PH chain between the ten Quillmane kills was:
QM #1 → shadow wolf → centaur foal → lioness → mist wolf → lioness → lioness → centaur archer → QM #2
QM #2 → shadow wolf → elephant → elephant → lioness → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → elephant → lion → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → mist wolf → lioness → elephant → lion → elephant → mist wolf → lion → lion → elephant → QM #3

September 18, 2026 Testing
A level 46 Ranger with 200 Tracking created a fresh D1 group respawning instance of Southern Karana. Quillmane was not already spawned when the test began.
Two group-member logs were available for this test and were combined to reconstruct the spawn cycle. The client clocks were offset by approximately 5 to 7 seconds, so duplicate events were reconciled by mob, killer, and sequence rather than by exact timestamp.
Quillmane was first located approximately 50 minutes after entering the instance and was killed approximately 52 minutes 50 seconds after the start of the test.
Starting with that first Quillmane, the cycle was followed through 7 total Quillmane deaths over approximately 1 hour 22 minutes. The combined logs contain 41 PH kills between those seven Quillmane deaths, plus one additional PH kill after Quillmane #7 before the test ended.
Quillmane #2 was killed by Brother Qwinn before the group could kill it. The death nevertheless advanced the spawn cycle normally. No Quillmane loot was obtained from that spawn.
The other six Quillmane corpses produced 4 Feathered Leggings and 2 Pegasus Feather Cloaks.
The complete test lasted approximately 2 hours 17 minutes.
The combined kill sequence remains consistent with the previously observed approximately 66-second respawn timer. Spawn times themselves are not written directly to the combat logs, so this test cannot independently measure the timer to the second. The shortest interval between two confirmed consecutive cycle kills was approximately 74 seconds, which is consistent with a roughly 66-second spawn followed by several seconds required to locate, reach, and kill the new PH.
The following PH types were directly confirmed in the post-Quillmane cycle during this test:
- an elephant
- a lion
- a lioness
- a mist wolf
- a shadow wolf
- centaur charger
- aviak rook
- aviak egret
- an escaped Splitpaw gnoll
Centaur charger, aviak rook, and aviak egret were not present in the previously documented PH list and were each observed in clean sequential positions in the Quillmane cycle during this test.
Aviak darter was also killed immediately following Quillmane #1, a group member killed a mist wolf within only a few seconds of the darter kill. Because only one mob can occupy the cycle at a time, the logs cannot determine which of those two mobs was the actual first PH following Quillmane #1. Aviak darter therefore should not be treated as independently reconfirmed by this particular sequence, although it had already been confirmed during the September 5 test.
Centaur archer, centaur foal, aviak harrier, and several other known candidate mobs were killed during the initial search before the first Quillmane appeared, but they did not occur in an unambiguous post-Quillmane cycle position during this test.
Observed Cycle
The combined observed PH chain between the seven Quillmane deaths was:
QM #1 → [aviak darter OR mist wolf] → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → QM #2 (killed by Brother Qwinn)
QM #2 → mist wolf → lion → mist wolf → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → shadow wolf → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → elephant → shadow wolf → QM #3
QM #3 → mist wolf → mist wolf → lion → elephant → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → lion → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → mist wolf → lion → lioness → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → lioness → centaur charger → lion → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → mist wolf → QM #4
QM #4 → mist wolf → QM #5
QM #5 → lion → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → lion → lioness → aviak rook → elephant → shadow wolf → shadow wolf → aviak egret → QM #6
QM #6 → mist wolf → escaped Splitpaw gnoll → QM #7
QM #7 → mist wolf → test ended
Quillmane Guide for Non-Ranger Trackers
The Quillmane cycle can also be isolated using the shorter-range tracking available to other classes. The original method used two known static-spawn mobs as spawn-order bookmarks, allowing the Quillmane PH to be identified by its position between those mobs in the Track window.
Requirements:
- Track (any level)
- Timers
- No one else in the zone killing potential PHs
- AOE damage or an already identified PH
Nice to have:
- SoW or faster movement
- Charm
Finding the PH
Gather likely PH types from around the zone. Once a group has been assembled, choose two mobs with known static spawn locations to act as spawn-order bookmarks.
Kill the first static mob, then kill the second after enough time has passed to create a useful window between their respawns. Kill the potential Quillmane PHs within that window.
When the static mobs respawn, use Track to locate mobs that spawned between the two bookmarks. Tracking displays the most recent spawns at the top, allowing the PH candidate to be isolated by its position in the spawn order.
Once the PH has been identified, repeat the process with as narrow a timing window as possible.
If Charm is available, charm something and use "/pet attack Quillmane" to determine whether Quillmane has spawned.
Important: The exact respawn timing of the static mobs may vary. The spawn-order technique remains useful, but the approximately 66-second Quillmane cycle should be used when identifying the Quillmane PH.
The Tale of the Pegasus (Fan Fiction)
Quillmane is thought to be a physical manifestation of the Spirit of the Karanas. Many have noticed the sudden appearance of the mystical beast when those who toil and slaughter the local game do so with excessive zeal. It is perhaps that lions and elephants are necessary for balance and harmony among the Karanas. It is known to most that all animals under the stars have their place in the lands and that proper numbers must be maintained for the environs to prosper. When the fertile lionesses and the young calves are killed, concerned forces seem to take an interest. The Pegasus comes without life, an undead and indifferent being and merely a vessel to be commanded, to be sent among the lands to observe and find those who disturb the balance. What response the Spirits of the Karanas have in store is shrouded in mystery for the White Winged Horse merely looks on, for now.
There are those who claim to hunt the Pegasus itself; that ripping the wings off the beast and affixing them to their own shoulders will give them the power of flight. One can frequently see these mad and tortured souls jumping off the battlements to their doom while clad in strange feathered pants, so what value are the ravings of the insane? Perhaps madness is the reward the Spirit of the Karanas visit upon those haughty enough to believe they can seize powers that can only be granted by the gods themselves.
