Spell Upgrading
Similar to weapons and armor, spells are able to be upgraded to become more powerful. To do so, one first needs to acquire a "mote". Motes come in various strength levels and typically are acquired via loot from killing mobs.
Next, one needs to open an information window for the spell being upgraded. The easiest way to do this is probably by Alt+Left Click or hold Right-Click on the spell icon in your Spell Bar, Spellbook, or the Actions window. In the information window, look for the upgrade section:
Notice that this spell currently is at Tier 0 (the initial and lowest tier). The "0 / 1" indicates how much progression this spell has towards the next tier. One can add motes to raise this progression level. Simply pick up the mote item and drop it into the "Place Mote" slot. For example, when using a minor mote, one can see in the image below that the item has progressed roughly half way through Tier 1:
When using a lesser mote, which provides more progression, one can see that the item has upgraded to Tier 2 and is 25% of the way through Tier 2 (1 / 4):
After clicking the Upgrade button, one can see some of the statistics for the spell have improved and the name has a "II" suffix to indicate its Tier level:
