Dangers
Lake Rathetear is a mid-level zone, and therefore is dangerous to people travelling through it who are of lower levels. The most dangerous part is the entrance from Southern Plains of Karana, which is heavily inhabited by gnolls during the day and undead at night. I recommend travelling through here at a brisk pace and invisible if possible if you cannot deal with these creatures. The live gnolls drop bronze weapons, and the undead pop at 8pm and despawn at 6am. They will pop all at once on top of you.

The other significant danger is the fact that the zone is mostly aquatic. Relying on boats is chancy at best, because now that the zone is more heavily travelled, the boats aren't always at docks like they used to be. Most of the walls are scalable, and it's possible to walk around much of the zone clinging to a rock face, but there are definitely parts where you will be forced to swim. Why is this dangerous? First of all, unless you are a truly excellent swimmer, fighting the aqua goblins, sharks, deepwater goblins, or Webclaw in the water is not going to be an enjoyable experience. The other problem is that there is rumored to be a lake monster that roams the lake. I haven't heard of him harrying adventurers lately, but that doesn't mean he isn't simply resting...

The other miscellaneous dangers have to do with the way the zone is laid out, with little pockets of creatures and adventure separated from the zone edges by a lot of water. Also, the enemies either come in packs or are alone but hidden away inside of a tower or building, with very little nearby room to rest and relax. Stepping onto land can be a scary experience...

More specifically, the danger areas are as follows... The hermit lives in a hut with the door facing away from shore, so you can't see him. He is KOS to evil races, at least, as well as good races, and will attack you as soon as you step onto the dock, and is about level 15. I have a funny screen shot of my ogre in a raft with his dead body sitting on the front, because I had to /corpse my body onto the raft without stepping off of it, and then float to the nearby shore. The stone skeletons are inside of their tower, and you have to walk up slowly to see them hiding in there. I'm not sure what level they are, but they're able to summon pets... You be the judge. The orc and bandit camps in the north have very limited space to rest nearby, mostly just up on the hill behind them. I got there by levitating, and I'm not sure you can walk by them without them attacking. The northern entrance is very dangerous, although thankfully very camped these days. Undead and spellcasting gnolls thrive in this area, and are very difficult to avoid.

Megalodon / Sea Monster / Loch Ness Monster
Rumors have long persisted among players about a monster lurking in Lake Rathe. In 2022, designer Brian Canary confirmed that there were plans to have a Megalodon of some sort but it did not make the final release. He did not deny it could have been present in the beta.

Benefits
Lake Rathetear has many benefits due to its unique layout. It is not a large, open zone like many of the other outside areas (the plains and the deserts across Antonica). It is laid out more like places like Rathe Mountains and Butcherblock Mountains, with several areas that all can be considered their own mini-zones in which to hunt. As such, there can be present no less than 11 groups of campers if everyone was nice and took their own spot, and are often many more than that because certain areas (the entrance to South Karana, for instance) have a large number of dangerous spawns. I guess this is only of benefit if you like to camp, but its a good zone for that.

The lake's location next to Southern Plains of Karana and the Rathe Mountains also make it a very busy transit area, with many groups heading through on their way to nearby higher level zones. This is a good area to auction off or for items that you need. There are also places to sell and buy items, so a busy adventurer could spend weeks and never leave the zone (other than to go to the bank).

Traveling To and From
In the northwest corner of the lake along its northern shore lies the entrance to the Southern Plains of Karana. This is something of a gauntlet, as that specific area is infested with both gnolls and undead who will attack all on sight, and even hang out on the dock for your boat. Just west of this entrance lies the zone edge to The Arena, through a tunnel by some aviak lookout posts.

To the east lies the zone to Rathe Mountains, nestled in what is actually the largest open area in the zone, between a camp of ogres and a camp of bandits...

Safe/Evac Spot
At zone (-644, 158)

Dangers
This zone can be extremely dangerous. It is not recommended for anyone under 5th level.

When the zone is populated by other players you can expect a train to zone every 5-10 minutes. Trains in Crushbone tend to involve mobs that are deadly to those who are just getting started here: orc legionnaires, orc oracles, an orc emissary, or sometimes even Emperor Crush himself. People can be shy about warning you that they are coming with hell on their heels, so always keep your eyes peeled if you are near the entrance. You'll do well to learn where mobs tend to be trained from and which paths they follow to get to and from the zoneline.

There are several places in this zone where pathing is, quite frankly, busted. Be wary over bridges, especially on the way to the slavers camp and even moreso outside of Crushbone Keep, where many wall camp pulls are done. If you're pulling an orc over the bridge and you see it suddenly go for a swim, you may want to immediately tell your group that it's time to train to zone. The path available to that orc for it to get out of the water generally involves running through many other mobs around the back of the castle.

Benefits
Despite the great danger in this area, there are many good reasons to hunt here. The first is the wealth that you can gather in a short time here. As a 7th level by myself, I gathered 2 platinum in the time it took me to go up less than one bubble. Most of the orcs here have some form of cloth armor or weapon on them, all of which is worth money. Some of the best weapons on the weaker orcs are Cracked Staffs, which you can sell for over 1 platinum to a friendly merchant. There's no better feeling than going home encumbered because you've got 3 or 4 of these in your backpack.

Another great reason people hunt here is for the treasure trove in unique items and quest items that can be found here. Some nice low-level items come out of this dungeon exclusively. First of all, there is the Shiny Brass Shield, a shield that sometimes appears on the Orc Trainer. This is a nice shield that is relatively cheap to buy now, and should be resting on everyone's arm if they can't use two weapons. Also, the Legionnaire's have shoulderpads and bracers that are regularly on the market for sale, as well as items that can be used to get one of the quest items, the Screaming Mace. Some of the other items that have become staples of this game are the Dwarven Ringmail Tunic, dropped by the Emperor himself, and the Dragoon Dirk, a highly sought after low- to mid-level piercing weapon, that drops off of our favorite newbie killer himself, D'vinn.

But the number-one reason people hunt in Crushbone is the experience. Crushbone is tied with Befallen for the highest Zone Experience Modifier in the game (at 2.13), meaning that any CB mob killed will grant more than double the experience that a comparable monster in a zone like Butcherblock or Southern Desert of Ro would. As if that weren't enough, the orcs here drop Crushbone Belts and Crushbone Shoulderpads, which can be turned in to Canloe Nusback (GM Warrior in Kaladim) for additional experience and a piece of cheap armor (about 1g5s to a vendor). The belts can be turned in one at a time, and the shoulderpads two at a time. The belt quest gives respectable experience up to around level 10, and the shoulderpads go even higher (probably past the point you should have moved on from Crushbone!). Both items are frequently bought and sold in Crushbone and Greater Faydark as well.

I personally greatly enjoyed hunting in Crushbone. The monsters came in more manageable numbers and the number of other hunters wasn't as annoying as it was just outside the gates. Also, they spawned closer together, so there wasn't as much of a problem with roaming (by you) or camping (by others). You can watch several spawn spots by yourself and make a good profit and good exp quite quickly.

Popular Camps
Trainer Hill:
This is a good camp for lower level characters. There are 6 or 7 orcs atop the hill and their respawn rate is fast enough that you will not need to pull from elsewhere in the zone. The orc trainer himself drops the shiny brass shield which is +10ac and +10svm.

Wall:
This refers to the area directly in front the bridge which leads to the castle. Generally groups hunting here will pull the orcs roaming around outside of the castle and even from within the castle itself if the group is strong enough.

Throne Room:
The highest level camp in the zone is inside of the castle itself. It can be very difficult to hold as there are 6-7 legionnaires and oracles which spawn within the room itself and their respawn rate is very fast. If the group is able to hold this room successfully it may be possible to pull both Emperor Crush and Ambassador DVinn from the tower itself.

Tents:
This is the tented area in the very back of the zone, holds orcs between pawn and legionnaires. The area shares the crevice filled with 4 random spawn orcs, with the Slaver cave. (See below) Doing a corpse run from here is difficult as most things will attack you as you go back to your corpse.

Slaver Cave:
Located on the left side of the map over the bridge, and hill with the orc centurion it is a building with 1 slaver and some quest NPCs inside of it. The accepted camp area is located in front of the building next to the tree, as this is a "safe area." The camp extends from the top of the hill on the right side of the camp, in the caves, and any roaming orcs to the right of the tree. Relatively easy to get to, levels 5-8 normally level here. Houses several slavers, a few centurions and 1 random legionnaire. (Killing the slaves will hurt your faction with the the city they are from.)

Slaver Pit:
You find this camp by following the right wall, it houses 4 slavers, the taskmaster, several slaves, and the named slave Retlon Brenclog a level 17 magician (Killing him hurts Ak'anon faction). The Taskmaster drops a 5/30 whip, and his brass earring. The brass earring is used for slaver quests, which result in many different rewards.

Traveling To and From Crushbone
There is only one entrance to Crushbone, directly north from the city of Kelethin in Greater Faydark. You can get to it by heading north from the northernmost lift in Kelethin (it's the one furthest away from the other two) or by following the path straight out. The entrance is ringed by two pyres, so it's hard to miss. From Felwithe you can either follow the trail to Kelethin and go north from there, or turn right directly out from the main entrance and follow the border of the zone all the way to Crushbone. Although the second method is more boring, it's also quicker and almost impossible to get lost doing.

* 1. Tents, inhabited by legionnaires
* 2. Castle Crush, where high levels spawn including emissaries, Ambassador DVinn, and The Prophet and Emperor Crush in the throne room
** Outside the castle entrance and across the bridge is the camp frequently called Wall
* 3. Slave Cabin, with inhabitants needed for Screaming Mace Quest
* 4. Slaver Caves, with slaves outside
* 5. Slaver Pit with the Orc Taskmaster
* 6. Trainer Hill ("Where camping was born...")
Note that the map is in error -- there is a land connection along the back wall from area 1 to behind the castle at area 5.

Dangers
Blackburrow can be an extremely dangerous dungeon to adventure in for unprepared players/groups. The most obvious danger is the grouping density of gnolls which often have as many as 5 gnolls spawning within aggro range of each other. Which is made even more difficult by the wide level range within these spawn groupings as it is common to see an elite guard within a group of lower level gnolls making a clean "pull" almost impossible. Also, Blackburrow gnolls are very social. They will eagerly come to the aid of their brethren as patrolling gnolls can sneak up on you from around blind corners, and even aggro from behind doors. Be very mindful of AoE and fear-inducing spells/abilities as one errant spell or a running gnoll can trigger massive trains.

During peak times when there actually are a decent number of players in the zone (10-15 people on average) the above mentioned trains become common. Quite often parties deeper in the dungeon will miss a pull and head for the surface dragging along every gnoll in their path. The architectural challenge with Blackburrow is that there is only a single tunnel which leads to the surface, and it is along this very tunnel that most lower level players hunt. This can lead to a lot of deaths if the training party doesn't get a chance to shout out a warning.

Another possible threat most people don't consider is the zone itself. Blackburrow contains a large number of bridges, narrow pathways, ledges, and water. While the NPC pathing is decent, it can still result in accidental trains, and players falling off bridges or getting stuck in cracks. Mind your step!

Benefits
This area, although dangerous, does provide some good benefits. First of all, the gnolls are generally pretty wealthy with the higher level ones often having several gold pieces each. Most of the gnolls you kill will either have a weapon, cloth armor, or even raw-hide armor off the higher level gnolls, all of which are worth cash. You'll find that every time you go home, you'll feel richer for having hunted there.

The other reason people hunt here is for quest items. The Blackburrow Gnoll Skin and Blackburrow Gnoll Pelt, which are the most commonly sought items, drop off of high-level gnolls here. Monks are seen here frequently hunting the skin and pelts for their Orange Headband. There are quite a few other quests that can be done here, looking for various items for use in the surrounding towns, so the place can be a hub of activity.

Probably the greatest benefit to hunting in Blackburrow for anyone are the gnoll fangs that drop commonly off of every gnoll in the zone. These can be handed in at Halas (Gnoll Bounty) and South Qeynos (Moonstones Quest) for exp at low levels, faction gains, and other rewards.

Traveling To and From
There are two entrances to Blackburrow. The first is on the southeast segment of the "canyons" of Everfrost, which can be hard to find given that the area feels like a maze by its enormous cliff faces and snow-induced, low-visibility. The tunnel entrance is guarded by a couple gnolls, and has two more as you progress down through the tunnel. The tunnel itself is long and used to be hidden in darkness, but torches light the way to Blackburrow.

The other entrance is in the northeast corner of Qeynos Hills. There is no path to the entrance, but you'll find it through the mouth of a gnoll head-shaped cave entrance that lies east of Surefall Glade and north to the Western Karana zone lines.
Blackburrow is the home of the Blackburrow clan of gnolls. It is something of a combination between underground dungeon and above ground hunting area, and represents the only pathway to get from Everfrost and the home of the barbarians to the Qeynos Hills and lands beyond. The overall structure of Blackburrow consists of two entrances and a ring with a deep hole in the middle. There are multiple tunnels to the lower levels where higher level gnolls can be found.
